Disney recently launched its DisneyHealthyLiving.co.uk website, supporting families making healthy choices. BritMums has been promoting its #HealthilyEverAfter campaign, along with key bloggers, as part of a sponsored project. Here, we share their stories, tips and advice (all opinions are those of the participating bloggers).
When it comes to eating more vegetables, experience tells us that what every child needs is good role models. Of course that means us as parents eating our greens. But there are role models even more powerful for children than the humans raising them: cartoon characters they love.
BritMums bloggers recently teamed up with Disney for their #HealthilyEverAfter campaign, to talk about how children’s favourite films and characters can, among other things, help inspire them to eat more vegetables. The project, sponsored by Disney, revealed some imaginative ways that Disney gets kids nibbling carrots, slurping up veg-filled pasta sauce, even drinking beetroot. Here, parent bloggers reveal some of those ways:
Make vegetables look tasty

A lot of this dinner table trauma can be overcome by the simple tactic of making vegetables look a lot more exciting and attractive – and kudos goes to Kate of Crafts on Sea who has fashioned a truly wonderful Simba from a handful of pepper strips, some sweetcorn and a paper plate. We loved the simplicity of the idea and its execution. Some people might look at a pile of peppers and see yellow and orange vegetables that will require cooking and/or seasoning; Kate sees a film classic.
Another sly trick is to rebrand vegetables as something more interesting: Lilinha Angel World’s blog came up with the idea of chopping vegetables and herbs into tiny pieces, mixing them with rice, then serving them in scooped-out tomato shells. These are not stuffed tomatoes — oh no, this is Mickey Mouse’s Magic Rainbow Rice!
Recreate favourite Disney scenes
Elsewhere, there are admirable attempts to disguise vegetables in some very unusual ways: a round of applause to Beesley Buzz’s spaghetti dogs. Inspired by that iconic scene from Lady and the Tramp, this family’s meatballs carry a whole bunch of finely chopped vegetables hiding within their meatiness (scroll down the watch the video). And, for the truly daring, Le Coin de Mel adds vegetables to smoothies and has even tried beetroot ice cream.
It all goes to show that it is possible to get your children to eat more vegetables – although you may have to be stealthy.
