Disney recently launched its DisneyHealthyLiving.co.uk website, supporting families making healthy choices. BritMums has been promoting its #HealthilyEverAfter campaign, along with key bloggers, as part of a sponsored project. Here, we share their stories, tips and advice (all opinions are those of the participating bloggers).

Five-a-day of fruit and vegetables? As a parent, sometimes that can seem more an aspiration than a firm target, as anyone who has struggled to get the correct number of carrot sticks or banana slices down the throats of small children. That’s why Disney’s new #HealthilyEverAfter initiative is a boon. It encourages and inspires families to get active and eat well. When a group of BritMums bloggers took part in promoting its #HealthilyEverAfter campaign, the power of Disney characters and films to inspire children – and their parents – became apparent.

How Disney has inspired healthy eating in families

The Pooh Bear platter – It’s not just younger members of the household who will see the appeal of this fabulous fruit platter, created by PODcast. It is crazily good, unbelievably healthy – an entirely fruit-made Pooh with a wholemeal toast circle representing his trademark honey pot. Thanks to the step-by-step photography, anyone can copy it.

Mickey Mouse pancakes – On Lilinha Angel’s World blog, some amazing Mickey Mouse banana-and-berry pancakes show the enduring appeal of the Mouse (and, again, helpful instructions demonstrate how easy these are to make). It would be all but impossible to imagine any child not being delighted by this healthy offering.

Other approaches have been more about making five-a-day an integral part of eating.

Eating like King LouieSamantha of North East Family Fun confesses that, in the past, she relied on the lure of the teashop to get her children – and herself as well – enthusiastic about a trip out. On their last day out, she took bananas and, pretending to be King Louie from the Jungle Book, got her children happily munching away.

Snacking like Jasmine

Likewise, Mari from Mari’s World had her twins eating carrot sticks by pairing them with hummus and insisting that was what Jasmine from Aladdin would have for a snack.

And growing up strong

Finally, Cilla from Shutterflies has an approach to healthy eating that I think we could all learn from. She doesn’t tell her daughter that eating up her fruit and veg will make her beautiful like her favourite Disney princess but tells her that it will make her strong and happy. Failing that, she’s not beyond grating a courgette into a muffin and smuggling some fibre into them that way…
