After our successful Back to Blogging week where we all shared our Pinterest URLs we thought we need to work on our social media and once again the lovely Melitsa Avila from Play Activites has come up trumps yet again with some short and sweet tips on how to make Pinterest work for you. Melitsa has made a fabulous video to help newcomers to the Pinterest scene on a previous post but now she takes her advice one step further.
Take better pictures
Have an image for your post.
Learn to use your camera with good lightning and clear pictures. Get to grips with picmonkey or photo manipulation software to adjust your picture. Don’t go over board on the special effects but a few touch ups and resizing will go a long way to making that first impression.
Words and pictures
Many times the photo is powerful enough with just a small amount of writing. Depending on the subject you may decide a word photo is better to do. Mix it up and find what works for your content. Don’t steal images.
Work with others
Collaborative boards with people in the same niche give all your audiences a diverse experience. The collective power of promoting and the different types of content each of you adds will extend your reach and introduce you to other people. Good collaborative boards have clear rules and are monitored. They often have communities behind them who regularly communicate.
There’s no easy way, that I know to find lots of collaborative boards to join but consider starting your own with a few friends from your niche. Seasonal boards work well for a short season if you want to have a try. If you do join a collaborative board- join in!
Follow a wide range of people
After you’ve found your mates, looked through your Facebook and Twitter stream it’s time to find new people. Use your blogroll and feed reader to find more of the blogs you like as they’re likely to have Pinterest posts you’ll like too.
Since it is possible to post personal interests and content you’ll find some new people.
Go to profiles of people you admire and look through their “Repins from” in the top right section for ideas of who else you may like. If your friend like to repin many pins from them you may like them too.
Another way is to go through a few of their followers lists. This is a real rabbit hole time suck so beware but it’s good way of quickly seeing a range of people you may not of realised you liked. Opening them in a new tab means you can look pretty quickly at their bio, boards and pins to make a decision.
Pin carefully
When pinning make sure you pin the blog post url and not the home page.
It’s easy to edit this mistake. Go to the pin. Edit and change to the correct URL. It’s really disappointing when you see a good pin and click the link and it goes to a homepage. The homepage now shows the latest post and not the pin you wanted.
Pin a range of content not just your own.
Repin others and pin from other sites. You don’t need to go crazy. Find a routine of a few pins a day depending on when your readers come online you may decide to do a few pins in the morning, few at lunchtime, few afternoon/school run time and a few in the evening.
Try different things and keep what works for you…
As with all new things it takes time to get to know, like and love it. There are many ways to use Pinterest along with things that work for some and not for others. Try things yourself for a time and keep what works for you. Talk to friends about what’s working for them and share what works for you. There isn’t one way to use Pinterest.
