If you are surrounded by friends, family and neighbours, sometimes struggling to find ‘alone time’, it is hard to imagine a day when all that noise just stops.
The phone doesn’t ring any more with someone wanting advice, a quick chat or a top-up on college funds. No-one pops in for tea and a gossip just because they were passing – and those dinner parties you were so famed for? They too have fallen fallow as friends and close cohorts move away to warmer/better/different climes.
Advancing years can also herald the loss of a life partner, friends and acquaintances – even just a bout of ill-health can sever ties once bound tightly. Whatever the reason or reasons, one day you look up and you’re alone and lonely.
“The epidemic of loneliness in this country” is the subject of Not Supermum’s poignant post ‘Loneliness doesn’t happen overnight’.
Jean’s post is, therefore, my pick this month for the read well worth your time and attention. Beginning with the news story of old Bill Palmer, you will read her post to the end and be moved. Featured on Post-40 Bloggers as ‘The Loneliness of Loneliness’, her post is still giving me food for thought.
On her blog, Jean writes about “parenting two teenage girls, gardening and home decorating/design, but also witters on about food, current affairs, music and all sorts of other nonsense”.
