Poetry and Prose Round-Up: Ahh, September, my Autumnal Friend.

With the summer over and done in a blaze of glory, we are back to the nights drawing in and that cosy Autumnal feeling. I think I said it last year but September feels like more of a new beginning to me than January. Something to do with it being the start of a new school term (old habits die hard!). How was your Summer? Mine was busy for all the right reasons. I put the linkys on hold for the month of August and spent lots of lovely time with various members of my family.

Whilst  things may have quietened down a little, it doesn’t mean that there is a lack of creativity out there. Steph over at Beautiful Misbehaviour, and my co-editor, has not only continued to host her Virtual Open Mic Nights on the last Wednesday of the month but she also featured on the GuardianWitness site with her Spoken Word poetry performance.

Sarah Miles (please note that she has moved from Supper and Syntax) continues her creativity after her keynote speech with one of her poems at BritMums Live this year and has had one of her poems selected for the Wise Words Festival which takes place in Canterbury between 12th and 21st September. She has also written two great pieces this month – a poem entitled Problem and piece of flash fiction in the form of The Secret Therapist.

Natalie Trice has started a new poetry blog called The Poet Wears Prada and I found her poem about Peaches Geldof ‘The Fading Light’ particularly beautiful.

Paper Swans, the site which supports poetry and flash fiction, are continuing with their great work and are planning some anthologies for 2015. As well as that, they are currently running a poetry competition and have four finalists: Fairytale, Anatomy of an Orphan Mind, The Tie for Toast and For Two?. Please go over and vote for your favourite. 

There are some really strong poets out there who continue to shine. Judith Kingston at Secrets of the Sandpit shares I Am Still Different, Redpfeffer goes from strength to strength and publishes a beautiful piece of writing called Folly on her blog, I loved Poetry and Pandemonium’s Dear Editors of Fashion Magazines and a new poet came to my attention in the form of a blog called Collecting Moments and her beautiful poem ‘The One With a Poem for My Daughter’. Amy Ransom Writes came up with a wonderful Poem for Mums over on Facebook – never a truer word written!

There were some really heartfelt poems too. Charlie Moo’s Letter to his Grandma was so gorgeous. He is really going to miss her. Vai Chin from Rambling Through Parenthood was a guest on my blog when I was on holiday. She wrote with strength about female genital mutilation and child, early and forced marriages as well as the horror that is female foeticide and female infanticide. This was brought to light in the Girl Summit this year and she wrote the powerful poem ‘Alive’.

Finally, I am going to leave you with a light-hearted poem from Musings from a 21st Century Stay at Home Mum. She has shared a truly lovely poem about the bygone age of the steam train.
