Join Caine’s Cardboard Challenge on 6 October

Let me introduce you to Caine. He became an online sensation this time last year. He went viral in every sense of the word. Children all over the world were truly inspired.

There were queues around the block of the hardware store. This was not just a virtual world; people stepped-up, both online and off.

Now it is the anniversary and it is time to step up again.

When I discovered this Cardboard reality a YEAR late, it was via Google+ as I have @youtube in my feed.

I immediately thought of all the “craft” bloggers. I normally avoid them, as I do food bloggers as my guilt at having never built or baked with Aaron niggles me every day.

This Cardboard Challenge set me to thinking. First off, I went onto the site … and was GUTTED to see that despite it being a worldwide sensation, there was only ONE planned event in the UK.

I am glad to see that there are now 4. But really, 4? Canʼt we do better? This is where you all come in. Hereʼs your to do list if you are up for it:

1. Watch the Cardboard Challenge You Tube video

2. If you want to know how it all started, watch the original You Tube video

3. Go to the Cardboard Challenge website and have a read.

4. Decide if you are going to go real life or virtual.

5. Real life means you have gone to “add an event” on the Cardboard Challenge website. You and your community are now going to host an event – hey! all you need is cardboard and a venue? Right?!? Real life could also mean that one of the current events on the map are near you. Enter your postcode to find out. Rock up and show your stuff. Either way, real life means you are probably going to go to your local grocery store and ask the manager for some cardboard.

7. Virtual means you will talk to your offspring and see if they would like to get creative and make something cool with cardboard. If they seem as inspired as I am, go for it. If not, sit them on a chair, and get THEM to watch the You Tube videos. Thousands of kids around the world already have already been inspired.

8. You will then spend from now until 6th October sourcing cardboard, getting the required tape and scissors and deciding on a game-plan. A get together with extended family? A get together with all the Mums you know? Arranging something with your childʼs school or your toddlerʼs nursery? Remember it is about education so they may just want to get involved…

Whatever you do, start getting ready, and come back here leave us a comment about your plans.

Then on 6th October weʼll have a linky so that you can post what you did. Did you host an event? Did your child create something with cardboard? Post about it and link up with us. If you charge for your event, note you donʼt have to donate to the Imagination Foundation – you can raise money for a local cause. As it says on their website, you can ask the people you do this with, what is a local charity that is important to THEM. Or you could even do some fundraising for your school.
