The Fresh voice category is often one of the hardest to choose a BiB nomination as many blogs on the shortlist will be new to you so BritMums has asked them all to write a guest post, we’re starting off with Xandi from The Mummy Scripts
Note to self: It’s not a competition, it’s a partnership, an LLP (yes I am married to a lawyer). We work as a team, we’re in this together, through thick and thin we stand united. All I need is a national anthem and we’re set.
Well, we are a team I suppose. But why does it sometimes feel like a competition?
How was your day?
Simple enough. A considerate question implying you care and are genuinely interested, or an opening argument to a heated debate about who had it harder that day? Jobs are tough, kids are tough, life is tough. I consider myself lucky to be at home with my children and I chose this path for myself, but it doesn’t mean I can’t have a good moan about it like anyone else does about their job.
My husband works hard. Long hours, long commutes with rain and disgruntled faces for company. He is the bread-winner and with three kids, we need the bread. I on the other hand get to spend my days playing, laughing, cuddling, organising, disciplining, cooking, tidying, chauffeuring, nursing, mediating and counting to ten. We both like it this way but can’t help ourselves from occasionally being drawn into a little bit of ‘who had a harder day’ come sundown.
It’s strange really when you think about it. Why would anyone want to compete for ‘most tired person of the day’? There are no prizes, medals or fanfare. Just the one-upness you achieve and what is that, really? But it’s there and I’m sure, in fact I know, we are not the only couple that have this. The problem is, there are no witnesses to your gruelling day (mine are usually sleeping by this point) so it becomes a battle of wills, but then again, you’re both too tired to see it through.
Let’s not even get into the sleep wars. We tend to share the night shifts, hubby with our eldest if he wakes and I get the twins. Who really knows the results the next day, usually it’s a blur anyway but we both give it a good try.
To be honest, I’m not really sure what all this is trying to achieve. It’s pointless pulling the “walk a mile in my shoes” as realistically we both know we’d muddle though each other’s ‘job’ pretty badly – even though I maintain I could wing an M&A deal (well maybe).
After all is said and done, we value each other’s roles and what they entail. We love and respect each other, so maybe we are a team after all. No matter how you look at it, we couldn’t do this without each other. Together we are parents. Not a lawyer or a Multi-tasker, but Daddy and Mummy. And what’s a team without its’ little mascots for company?
Xandi Channo is a thirty-something mum of three, Little D (four) and twin toddlers, Little M and Miss S (two). Married to her beloved hubby, Daddy J, she’s juggling life in suburbia while trying to have a grown-up conversation once in a while. She started her blog, The Mummy Scripts, as an outlet for all the wonderful, strange and funny stuff that life in a family of five has thrown her way. Before motherhood Xandi was an actress, a role now looking to be filled by Little D and probably more successfully! She’s swapped her Bellini’s and Jimmy Choo’s for cold coffee and trainers but wouldn’t have it any other way
The Mummy Scripts has just made the shortlist for Fresh Voice in the Brilliance in Blogging Awards. Xandi is beyond thrilled and honoured to be amongst such fantastic blogs. She would love you to consider voting her through the finalist stage – if you like what you read!

Yep, I find myself doing this Xandi and you're right, it doesn't serve any purpose. I'm going to think next time before I start to play any type of one-upmanship game. The sleep deprivation doesn't help, but I'm going to be more conscious of it from now on! :-)

Thanks for commenting Maddie, I think everyone is probably guilty of it at some point or another and when you're tired - that's the worst!!

This made me smile. Completely resonates with me. I guess in my attempt to justify my stay at home existence (as if it needed it!)I need my hub to understand its not all fun. But you're right- I get all the cuddles and seeing all the firsts. Despite the tiredness I wouldn't have traded that for the world.

Hi Karen, thanks so much for commenting! I think I also get the better end of the deal but as you say, there's always the urge to make it known that you're not sitting on the sofa all day watching daytime tv!
