Education Roundup: May the education force be with you

Hello and welcome to the May Education Roundup. I’ve been doing these Roundups for around a year now and have loved rummaging through a wonderful array of education related posts. But sadly for me this is my last Roundup, the demands of juggling my business and parenting have finally caught up with me!

Thank you to all the brilliant bloggers whose posts have peppered these round-ups over the last few months. I will be handing over the Education round-up, so be ready to welcome a new editor next month.

Kicking off May is Sarah at Mother of Three World, who has been musing over her son’s secondary school report, which uses a traffic light code of red, green and er, white. It’s not that there are four red ‘got worse’ boxes on the report that is bothering her, more that the reason appears to be down to a lack of effort on her son’s part.

Michael Gove has been at it again this last month… refining his stand-up comedy routine. His latest joke? Proposing longer school hours and shorter school holidays. Actually Mummy has written a letter to Mr Gove showing her dismay and pointing out that while kids need education, they also need rest and time away from school.

These thoughts are echoed by Emma over at Emma and Three, who sees things from a teacher’s perspective as well and talks about it in her post, Mr Gove you really have upset me today.

And just for good measure, because maybe, just maybe Mr Gove reads the BritMums Education round-up, here’s a post wot I wrote on the subject of Michael Gove’s longer school hours proposals, because I am worried he has school and education muddled up with childcare.

Right, tomfoolery of the Gove aside, here’s a wonderfully thought-provoking post from retired but not retiring headmistress Julia over at Julia’s Place. Take a read of her set of now and then scenarios and then leave your comment alongside other comments that are equally as thought provoking as Julia’s post.

The sun is finally out and that means that there’s plenty of learning to be done for pre-schoolers and toddlers out in the garden. Now, how’s this for value, a post from RainyDay Mum about ten wonderful posts on things to do to stimulate the minds of toddlers and pre-schoolers out in the garden.

Now, see if you can get your head around this… long division Spanish style. Yes really, totally different to how we do it over here and proving something of a headache for Brit mum abroad Lisa who writes at Family Life in Spain, as she tries to help her children with their homework.

And I am ending this month’s Roundup with a plea from Ross Mountney to stop the educational powers that be to stop mass producing kids towards one outcome. Have a read, see if you agree with Ross’s thoughts.
