I really enjoyed following the BritMums #PowerToSwitch Twitter party on Tuesday. Some fantastic savings were made and endless ideas shared on how to spend that extra cash.
As many of you already know a massive 13.5 million households across the UK are missing out on a combined total of £2.7 billion by sticking with their current energy supplier or existing tariff and there’s never been a better time to switch to a better deal.
But, if you didn’t know, you’re not alone. That’s why the Government has launched the ‘Power to Switch’ campaign – to encourage people to take advantage of the best energy deals on offer now and to see if they too, can save money.
When I’m out and about, people talk about the time and effort it takes to switch and believe me, as a busy mum of 2, I know just how precious time can be. But, in fact, Ofgem suggest that on average it takes just 15 minutes to switch and new rules mean that typically you could be on a better deal within 17 days.
The BeAnEnergyShopper website has a handy guide and a list of Ofgem accredited websites who can take you through the switching process. All you need to hand is your postcode and a recent bill. Your bill will contain the information you need including your current tariff name, its end date, your method of payment and your annual energy use.
‘It’s not worth my time switching’ is another phrase I hear. It might surprise you then to learn that many people are saving £200 a year or more by shopping around. Our campaign has been running for nearly two weeks now and in that time I’ve been really pleased to see examples of even bigger savings – like first time mum Sarah who found out she could save £741.
Yet people are not just switching energy supplier due to price. With 27 suppliers in the market there is more competition than ever. If excellent customer service is of the upmost importance, or renewable or low carbon electricity matters to you, then take the time to shop around.
