Mini Masterclass: Find out what to write for SEO

To make your site as SEO-friendly as possible, you’ll want to ensure you’re creating the kind of content people are searching for. Here’s an easy way to do it, by finding out what people are asking about.

You can use this insight to adapt or expand your existing posts or create new ones that answer the questions your readers want to know.

How to discover what people are searching for

Go to Answerthepublic.com. This is a web-based tool that scrapes and collates Google’s auto suggestions. Here, you can match up the content you are creating with the things that people are looking for in Google search.

Type in your root keyword/s (for example, potato recipes, nappy rash, family holidays) and you’ll see the most up-to-date suggested search phrases, displayed visually in a wheel format. Click on any one of the search phrases in the wheel and you’ll be taken to that search results page so you can see what successful search terms your competitors are using. You can also choose to see the results in a word list format. Use these suggestions to create content that matches your site’s mission with the kind of information readers want.

Here is a video tutorial on how to use the tool more in-depth — but you can also simply use it as a quick way to see what is popular and employ those terms and phrases into your copy and metas.

The Google BERT update

One development that has affected search results is BERT – the November 2019 update that saw lots of movement and changes in the rankings from Google. It’s a big deal with search experts. It also affects those of us who want people to find our content via search engines.

With our SEO in Minutes strategy you don’t need to know more about BERT at this time, but it can be helpful to educate yourself about these changes and their effects. Many bloggers, influencers and businesses saw their search rankings change drastically because of the algorithm changes in the BERT update.
