Education Round-up: A gold star to all this month’s wonderful bloggers

Hello and welcome to the first Education Round Up. From here on in, the second Wednesday of every month will officially be known as Education Round Up Wednesday. No really, it will.

For those who don’t know me – of which there will no doubt be many – my name is Luci and I blog at www.motherwifeme.com. I have a two-year-old daughter and as a result have a burgeoning interest in education.

The Education Round Up will encompass all-things education related. Be it home ed, flexi-schooling, the varying education methods – Montessori and Steiner to name but two, nursery through secondary and beyond, state and private, extra-curricular… I won’t just be featuring the ‘doing’ of education; I’ll be featuring bloggers who are fretting or pondering about education decisions and bloggers who are ranting about education issues.

First up, kudos to home educating mum, Merry, at Patch of Puddles for managing to keep my attention whilst talking about maths. I promise it has nothing to do with her frequent use of the word cake.

The Baby Genie dares to ask – with her tongue firmly in her cheek – whether every parent feels like his or her own child is a genius.

If you’re wondering what you can do to help your child develop a lifelong love of learning, you’d do well to visit Annie Hall’s (what a great name!) blog and check out her post on developing your child’s memory: Help Your Child To Learn

Please stop by Ross Mountney’s Notebook and read her inspirational post on encouraging children to play and the importance of imaginative and investigative play in relation to learning.

Rainy Day Mum’s blog is full of thousands of ideas for occupying children and stimulating their minds. This post on colour sorting really caught my eye.

Tasha beautifully takes us on her daughter’s journey to learning to read on her blog, Wham Bam

Ok, so I’m bending the rules here a little (it’s just like being back at school) by flagging up a post from October ’11 that was sent to me by Sarah at Mum of Three World, when I asked for post suggestions for the Education Round Up. This is a great post is about facing up to the choices you have to make when selecting a secondary school for your child.

And talking of educational choices, here’s a post by More Than A Mum in reaction to a report saying parents are opting to send their daughters to private schools as a way of side-stepping WAG culture.

Mary Ryan is facing up to a different education milestone; as she ponders Is It Really that Time Already? in advance of her son starting school in September. Given Mary and her family live in Spain, this post makes for especially interesting reading, as her son will be starting school at the ripe old age of three.

Fretting about whether your child will get into the nursery you’d like for them? Well, Fiona from I Mummy has written a light-hearted guest post on this very BritMums Blog about losing sleep over whether her son will be accepted into her first choice nursery.

Foxed by your children seemingly starting to speak a different language to you? Elaine at Little Sheep Learning has written an enlightening post on phonics.

Here’s a lovely idea from Emma at A Matter of Choice, who takes you through how to make your own alphabet book, to encourage your child with his or her spelling.

And talking of different languages, here is a post from Gaelic Medium Mum, who has enrolled her children in a Gaelic Medium school, even though it is not hers or their native language. The overarching name for these kinds of antics is non-native bilingualism and it’s a subject close to my heart as I am helping my daughter learn French, even though I am far from fluent.

Ready for a rant? Here’s a post by a mum of two boys on Glosswatch on the subject of gender stereotyping in education and how it conflicts with her own desire to raise her sons free from such stereotyping.

I am ending the first Education Round Up with a truly wonderful post from Emma-Kate, who blogs at Musings of a 21^st Century Stay At Home Mum, on the subject of Resilience, as she navigates her son’s path through life and education, rather than handing the task to the educational powers that be.
