There are loads of different philosophies on how to grow a Twitter account. Here are some tips I got from a fellow journalist a while back. They may sound a little clinical – there’s no mention of “having loads of great conversations and sharing jokes”, but they do give a basic roadmap for helping to get your name out there.
What do you think about these 7 steps for finding more Twitter followers? Too basic? Wonderfully simplistic? What’s your best Twitter tip?
1. Make 1,000 friends
2. Post friendly comments introducing blog links “wrote this because…” etc
3. Jump into some hash-tag conversations. You’ll come up in searches and get inside ongoing discussions
4. Link to other websites and blogs that you think your followers might be interested in – it shows you know what Twitter’s about
5. Retweet. Share news stories, interesting comments from other bloggers, good links
6. @ reply. When someone has said something to you, respond to them directly. It’s about conversation
7. Ask questions of your followers. They don’t have to be big and heavy – just something you’re interested in and want to chat about. Which food do you argue about with your children? Pets for toddlers – good or bad?
