Julia Skinner is an established blogger, in her past she was a school headmistress. She mixed the two and created the 100 word challenge to encourage children to get words on to paper and her project has taken off more than she ever dreamed possible, she needs volunteers to read the children’s words and comment in order to keep up their enthusiasm, can you help her? Please read her letter
My name is Julia Skinner. I am an avid blogger and I run 100 Word Challenge which is a weekly writing challenge for young people under 16. It is having HUGE impact on children’s progress in writing and really engaging them. There are now over 1200 entries each week.
It is a simple concept. I set a prompt of a few words / picture & the children have 100 words to produce a creative piece of writing. This is posted on their class blog then linked to 100wc.net where magic happens! There, a team of volunteers comment on every post leaving praise & some suggestions for improvement.
The success of the challenge lies in this extended audience. The children love the idea of someone from the other side of the world reading their work. The team is international & made up of teachers, parents, grand parents – anyone! My problem is that there are only 135 of us!
My aspiration is to have 3/4 comments on every post but with the numbers posting & the size of the team, that is currently impossible.
Can any of your readers dedicate one hour of their week and join the team of commenters? They will be given a set of guidelines and 10 numbers to comment on.
Can you help Julia continue to support writing in our schools? Please contact her on Twitter @theheadsoffice or via 100 Word Challenge
