World Moms Blog – writing about motherhood and saving lives

Jennifer Burden is a mum and founder of World Moms Blog. The blog features content about motherhood from around the world. Now Jennifer has found a way to combine that with meaningful causes. Here she describes how:

I have always had an interest in different cultures and often wondered how people around the world do things?

I was the girl who talked for hours with the international exchange students, who worked and saved for my first trip to Paris at 15, who won a scholarship to live in Japan for a summer (despite my parents forbidding me to even apply) and I have always been curious about anthropology and exploring new places.

Dreaming of being an international relations major, I graduated from university with a degree in Finance, a choice I made to help pay for my education but now I have found a way through blogging to get back to my international interests.

In November 2010 I founded World Moms Blog which now writes from 22 countries and has over 50 contributors. Together, our contributors have a say in navigating the future of the organization as well as writing about motherhood, culture, human rights and social good.

We have covered topics such as the global differences in maternity leave beginning with Norway, child discipline in India and Saudi Arabia, opinions on affordable help in Malaysia and Indonesia, autism awareness in Canada, unborn babies in Israel destined for the army, teenage pregnancy in Australia, post partum depression in the USA, security fears in “the murder capital of the world” in Mexico and the latest craze in French parenting compared with, well, parenting in Kenya!

Our global mothers have been so enthusiastic about our social good advocacy that they’ve taken it offline! World Moms Blog has teamed up with the UN Foundation in Washington, DC and the GAVI Alliance in Geneva, Switzerland to help raise awareness and save the lives of children around the globe with life-saving vaccinations.

Our contributors have hosted Shot@Life parties and GAVI Global Tea Parties around the world and a team of World Moms Blog contributors is working on an international documentary with the GAVI Alliance to help raise awareness.

Did you know that every 20 seconds a child dies of a vaccine-preventable disease? Pneumonia and diarrhea are the leading causes of death in children under the age of 5 in the developing world.

According to the UN Foundation, “Seventy-five percent of unvaccinated children live in just 10 countries. For children in India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, China, Uganda, Chad and Kenya, access to vaccines means the difference between life and death, a healthy life or a lifetime of struggle.”
