I know it’s wonderful to travel and explore this fascinating world of ours. But sometimes we need to step back and appreciate the beauty on our own doorstep.
My plan had been to share your posts about self-catering in the UK but as the majority of posts just happened to feature accommodation in Devon and Cornwall, I thought I would keep it small and focused on this treasured part of England.
My son is in his second year at Exeter University and I am only now discovering the delights of Devon: I can’t believe I’ve never explored the county before. Jean, Not Supermum, agrees with me in her post Choosing a holiday for teenagers, and why I’m in love with Devon. The family stayed at Finlake Holiday Park in Chudleigh, near Newton Abbot. Activities such as archery and horse-riding were on offer there and their VIP timber-clad holiday home was well-designed. Jean recommends splurging on your own outdoor hot tub.
On the other side of Dartmoor near Tavistock, Jane, Practically Perfect Mums, had a fabulous time at the award-winning Woodovis Park Caravan and Camping Park. I love the idea of a visiting hog roast and mobile fish and chip shop plus the novel use of an old phone box: a place for leaflets suggesting local walks. Review: Woodovis Park family holiday
If you’re thinking about holidaying with extended family or a group of friends, have a peek at this holiday home, Lympscott Barn, in North Devon. A large group of bloggers were invited to try it out for a weekend. A working farm with horses and cows as neighbours, the house exuded style and quality. Kim from Kick Back Travel had spotted The Point at Polzeath some years ago when on a campervan holiday in Cornwall. She returned with her family this summer to stay there, choosing one of the new and extremely stylish eco-friendly apartments. I can see why she was entranced with the accommodation: the Scandi style is a huge draw: Review: The Point at Polzeath
The delightfully-named ‘One Puddle’ house near Fowey in Cornwall was the perfect choice for a big family celebration for Molly, Mother’s Always Right. Cleverly mixing old and new styles, this luxurious accommodation was a house with personality: A very special mini-break to Cornwall.
Padstow is a firm favourite with Sarah, Mum of Three World. The family were keen to find a holiday home with WiFi this year so plumped for One High Street, Padstow which, although quite small, was tastefully decorated, well-equipped and and very close to the town centre. I think they may return.
Sarah might have been seeking WiFi but Globalmouse blogger, Fiona, and her family tried accommodation which was ‘completely off-grid’. A tipi holiday isn’t for everyone and it certainly isn’t glamping but what it lacks in facilities it makes up for in a sublime setting, relaxation and that particular joy to be had from toasting marshmallows on a fire pit. Finally, we can’t visit Cornwall without mentioning Coombe Mill, run by our very own BritMum blogger, Fiona and her husband, Nick. I’ve been reading a couple of recent posts from delighted holidaymakers sharing their love for this unique family farm and couldn’t decide which one to use. I’ve decided to use them both, plus a further post to give you more detailed information about the accommodation.
