Travel Round-up: In search of good food

On our travels, it’s very often the food we eat which can stir memories for years after.  This month’s round-up features some tasty offerings, where food and a sense of place go hand in hand.

We’ve just returned from a week’s road trip around Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, an area blessed with excellent supplies of fish, meat and dairy products. We ate like kings, staying in some wonderful boutique hotels which pride themselves on their cuisine. The highlight was a superb dinner at the Blackaddie Hotel, cooked by Scotland’s Chef of the Year, Ian McAndrew: truly unforgettable. 

 

Fish Course

Moving from South West Scotland to South East England, Whitstable is the perfect destination for seafood fans. Mini Travellers features a post that mentions a number of excellent eateries in the town, described as family friendly foodie heaven.  

Emm in London is also a fan of Whitstable. She managed to somehow tuck into delicious oysters and lobster in a blustering gale outside The Lobster Shack 

 

A Taste of Europe

In the Basque region of Spain, the city of San Sebastian is renowned for its cuisine. Ting from My Travel Monkey has done all the hard work for us, suggesting the top 12 places to eat. If you are in Malta, Globalmouse Travels recommends you head to Caffe Cortina in Valletta for some yummy Maltese sweet treats.

Cathy from Mummy Travels was able to recreate wonderful memories of holiday cuisine by attending a cookery evening. Thoughts of Greece came back to her as she tried out a recipe for lemon and oregano halloumi kebabs.  

If you love your food, Italy never disappoints.  Wander Mum recommends 7 dishes you must eat in Emilia-Romagna   including tagliatelle, Parma ham and, of course, gorgeous gelato. Penny at Parentshaped feasted on just about everything possible from pasta to polenta on the day we ate Bologna. She also witnessed the creation of Parmegiano Reggiano during a tour of a local factory.

 

Buffet Selection

Be ready for your taste buds to tingle when you read about Heather on Her Travels in Northern Ireland. Delights from breakfast to dinner along the beautiful Causeway Coast.

Say Cheese!

Like Penny in Bologna, Samantha from North East Family Fun experienced the birth of cheese when she took her children on a Northumberland Cheese dairy tour , finishing with a great value lunch.

If you still crave more cheese, What Up, Swags?! munched on many a free sample at the Gouda Cheese Market which is regularly held in this pretty town in Holland during the summer months.

 

Last Orders

Emma, A Bavarian Sojourn, can give you all the information you need about beer festivals in Germany and particular, Munich’s Oktoberfest. This year her little one has been given a wonderful introduction to the festivities: Baby’s first bier fest.
