Teens & Tweens Round-up: Good reads to warm you up

Hands up how many of you have asked your tween or teen to put on a warmer coat this month. That’s all of you then! There is something flowing through the blood of adolescents that seems to make them resistant to cold. Warm and water proof clothing is an abomination to them. This is just one of the subjects where parents and teens seem to be poles apart. Yet, in other ways, we become closer to our children when they are teens than we have ever been.

Loads of tween and teen parent bloggers have shared their posts with me this month. They reflect the fantastic variety of life with tweens and teens. Here are a few that I have selected for you to read.

  • I share my recent post from After the Playground on the changes to intimate piercing laws in Wales. There are some important changes that parents of young people under the age of 18 years need to know.
  • Katy at Experienced Bad Mom shares a lovely post (If hockey Moms got a medal) about all the work that Mums do to support their kids in sports clubs. Have a read, it’ll make you proud of yourself!
  • Parenting teens and young adults is all about finding different ways to stay close as they find their own way in the world. I love this post from Mary about facing an empty nest yet again.
  • This thought-provoking post from Sophie at Old House in the Shires called ‘Is Modern Living Creating a Crisis for our Children’, is an intelligent analysis of how modern lifestyles are one of the reasons for the rise in our children’s anxiety.
  • Sarah at Mum of Three World shares a personal experience of choosing subjects for GCSE. This is often referred to as ‘options’ and can cause a lot of stress for children and their parents. Sarah gives a useful overview of the process in her son’s school here.
  • For a little light entertainment, have a read of Sharon’s post about the hilarious implications of tagging your teens in a selfie. You have been warned!
  • Finally, I share my post on one of my favourite subjects – teen career choices. There is so much pressure on our young people to get this right. Here is some help that is available and actually very useful!

That’s it for this month. What did you think of them? Please do leave me a comment. Good luck with the rest of this term as we roll towards Easter. If you have a blog post that you think will be useful for Mums and Dads of tweens, teens or young adult children I would love to read it. You can submit it for consideration by emailing me at [email protected]. Take care and I’ll see you next month.

About Sharon Parry

Sharon is a Mum to three fabulous tween and teen daughters. After leaving a scientific academic career to raise her family she discovered the world of writing which ultimately led to her launching her blog http://www.aftertheplayground.com in early 2016.
As a veteran of the parenting scene, you’d think she’d know what she was doing by now. She doesn’t. Instead, she is gradually adjusting to parenting teens and adult children and will probably become an expert shortly after her youngest leaves home. She shares her experiences of defining this fascinating stage of motherhood (and of herself) on her blog and at @DrSharonParry1.
