So, here we are at the end of the summer holidays already. Big changes are afoot for our tweens and teens. Perhaps you have a transition to high school on the horizon or that dreaded move to university? Tissues at the ready!
Meanwhile, Mums and Dads are forging a new life as their kids need them less. It’s a bitter-sweet experience as we learn to let go but one that is packed with opportunities for creating a new life with our young adults. Thankfully, there’s a growing band of wonderful bloggers writing about this fascinating stage of parenthood.

To keep you entertained and informed this September, here is my pick of tops posts for you.
- I share my post on the things you really shouldn’t do when your kid leaves for university. I have done several, so it’s a case of do what I say not as I do!
- From Emma and 3, a very thought-provoking post about teen attitude and whether it is actually a bad thing after all!
- Another very revealing post from Liberty on the Lighter Side where she asks her kids some very clever questions and their recent USA road trip and gets some amazing answers.
- I love this post from Daisies and Pie giving a practical list of what to pack in your daughter’s bag as she heads off to high school.
- Another practical post from the Motherhood Diaries with some gorgeous ideas for a teen bedroom makeover
- The teen years are all about building confidence and resilience. This is a very useful summary of what we, as parents, can do to help from a Beautiful Space.
- Finally, I share a beautifully reflective post from That British Betty on the 18 Summers we get to spend with our wonderful children before they become adults and why their 18th birthday is the beginning and not the end.
So, there are my choices for this month. On a positive note, I have just spent a glorious summer with my teens and young adult children so there is definitely plenty of family life to be had post-18!
You can read plenty more from parents of teens and tweens each month in the #TweensTeensBeyond linky on my blog. If you have a blog post that you think will be useful for Mums and Dads of tweens, teens or young adult children I would love to read it. You can submit it for consideration by emailing me at sharon.parry67@gmail.com. Take care and I’ll see you next month.
About Sharon Parry
Sharon is a Mum to three fabulous tween and teen daughters. After leaving a scientific academic career to raise her family she discovered the world of writing which ultimately led to her launching her blog http://www.aftertheplayground.com in early 2016. As a veteran of the parenting scene, you’d think she’d know what she was doing by now. She doesn’t. Instead, she is gradually adjusting to parenting teens and adult children and will probably become an expert shortly after her youngest leaves home. She shares her experiences of defining this fascinating stage of motherhood (and of herself) on her blog and at @DrSharonParry1.
