Teen and Tween Round-up: Anxious times

Teen and Tween Round-up: Anxious times

teen boy 610Quite without planning it, there seems to be a bit of theme with this month’s post – we’ve got an awful lot of anxious tweens. Is this a modern phenomenon, or has it always happened? What is it about the tween years that bring these things on? I have no answers, just some very moving posts from some fabulous parents to share. (But if anyone does have any advice and experience to offer, I’m sure these ladies would welcome it!)

The world can be a scary place when you’re 10. There’s a lot of bad things going on in the world right now and 29 Year Old Mama’s son is worrying about them. How do we as parents explain all of these terrible things in the news when we can’t even understand them ourselves?

I’m sure we’re all guilty of using words like ‘anxious’ and ‘anxiety’ to mean ‘slightly worried’, but Cotton Wool and Eggshells knows that anxiety means a whole lot more than that – her 11 year old daughter has been going through it for years. Her description of a situation at church is so raw and so moving. (She’s a fairly new blogger and I would advise you to read her blog – it’s fab, it was very hard to choose which post to use for this round-up.)

Rachel at Me and My Life is another mum dealing with pre-teen troubles. Her daughter has just started secondary school and is feeling very down on herself. Does anyone have any advice for her?

I love this post from Suzanne at 3 Children and It about her son turning 10. It’s such a moving and positive post about how he’s grown and changed over the last year, written with so much love.

I had to laugh at this from Slummy Single Mummy about her daughter’s very high standards when she goes to hotels and restaurants. I think she makes some very good points!

There’s an awful lot of sadness in this month’s round-up, so let’s break it up with some anger! Over at MumofThree World I shared the none-too-pretty story of a recent, pointless fight between my sons. I’m pleased to hear it’s not just my kids that behave in this ridiculous way.

Breaking up can be hard to do – especially for a teenager. Chelsea Mamma shares her advice for helping teens through a break-up – definitely one to remember for future reference.

There can be no denying that teenagers can be challenging, and Mummy Endeavours has had to put up with a fair amount. I love this positive post about how proud she is of her son as he got top marks at school.

Jodie from A Quirky Kook describes her feelings in the last few days as her teenage twins get ready to set off for university. We’re all going to have to go through this one day – eek!

Chris from Thinly Spread is a couple of weeks ahead of Jodie. She shared this moving post as she started to adjust to her eldest son being at university. It’s a big change for the whole family as this post shows.

Jodie is on a roll this month, because I just had to share a second post from her – all about towels. Yes, towels. Have a read, it really made me laugh.

Another blogger with teenage twins at university is Izzie Anderton. This months she shares with us all the best things about her daughters going back to uni. Yes, there are advantages apparently – things like the ‘bedroom issue’. I’m sure lots of parents of teenagers would like to know how to deal with that particular matter.

Travelling has become a rite of passage for teenagers, but sadly it’s not always safe. Best Dad I Can Be shares the story of how it feels when your teenage daughter is robbed in a foreign country.

That’s all for this month. If you blog about teen or tween and would like to be included in the next round up, please send me your links. Or you can add them to the linky below!

About Sarah Wood

Sarah is mum to a teenage boy and a tween boy and girl. When it comes to primary school stuff, she's got it sussed. But she's realising that as secondary school and puberty hit, she's still got a lot to learn! Between tweeting, blogging and parenting, Sarah is a freelance PR and copywriter, who still finds time to run long distances and eat a lot of chocolate. It doesn't leave much time for housework.

You're very welcome, Mummy Writes! Your blog is such a beautiful read and, I think, quite unique. I haven't read any other blogs with such a focus on anxiety. I'm sure it must be very reassuring for other parents in a similar position.

Thanks so much for the generous mention Sarah! I really look forward to this roundup! Will enjoy reading the other bloggers' experiences with 'tweendom' too! x
