Recently a friend of Katy Hill’s, radio personality Simon Hirst, announced he is going to live the rest of his life as a woman. In a moving and frank post, she talks about the decision and the bravery it takes to go public with that kind of personal announcement. The announcement and the response has also restored her faith in human nature. Here, Katy tell us why.
Human nature is a funny old thing.
As a teen, it’s pretty fair to say that I was obsessed with Michael Jackson’s take on it. Yes, “Human Nature” is one of the few MJ songs where my parents, even now, would probably be able to recite EVERY lyric! The cassette player in my bedroom used to, literally, beg for mercy as I cranked that volume button to the max! No wonder my long-suffering mum and dad “treated” me to a Sony Walkman that Christmas!
As an adult, human nature often lets me down. Little things really bug me – like when I wait for AGES to let a car pass and the driver doesn’t even bother to thank me. Or when people push past my children and tut, as if they’re in the way! Or when people blow hot and cold at the school gate and you don’t know if you’ll be met with a smile or a scowl!
Obviously, on a global level, there’s much to make us doubt human nature at the moment.
But this past week, something has happened that has made me smile and helped me think more positively about human nature.
Last week I blogged about a wonderful friend who announced he was no longer Simon and would now be Stephanie. But he didn’t whisper the announcement. He did it on national radio. And I held my breath and waited for the reaction.
The outpouring of love and support for Stephanie was overwhelming! The messages of support on her Facebook and Twitter pages are still pouring in now, she’s been featured in the national media and #Hirsty has been trending for days. I could literally sob for her. I’m so thrilled for her, and for what it says about how progressive we are.
Today, my faith in human nature is cranked to the max!
