Review: Power Dough

Some parents dread the arrival of the word “crafts” because it conjures up images of never-ending glitter, paint splodges and general messiness. However, it can also be a lot of fun, especially if you give in to it completely and embrace it and join in. We’ve always loved crafts and during the drizzly days of winter it’s a great excuse to get molding doughs out and see what we can create. We were asked to try out the brand new Power Dough – the molding dough that can power mini motors, light bulbs and more!

For those who haven’t heard of it, Power Dough is a new craft product on the market for ages 3+. Included in a standard pack, comes 4 doughs, 4 mini battery parts, several rubber items that can either light up, turn or spin when connected to a battery part and a carving tool as well.

The idea behind this activity, is to create your own sculpture, be it an animal, a car, a house or whatever takes your fancy. Then add one of the battery motors with a rubber or plastic part on and when the battery touches the dough, the rubber/plastic will either light up, spin or even make a noise.

We initially started making a sculpture and went to put the battery and spinner on at the end but then realised you kind of need to build around the mini motor otherwise it sticks out so we started again and built it inside. There’s no panic that it will constantly run as it’s touching the dough as after about 10 seconds it turns off until you press down again.

Once I had shown Alyssa, who is 3, how the batteries worked with the added bits, I let her explore for herself and she found it very easy to use. She found the fact she could make something spin or light up absolutely amazing and spent several minutes just experimenting with this and how to turn it on herself.

We spent a few hours together, building different shapes and creatures and vehicles and adding in the different parts. It’s a great activity that kids can do alone or together with us big kids too. The only thing I would say is that the dough does seem drier than other doughs we have used so do make sure containers are shut tight as it felt a little dry after being out for a few hours when we were playing with it.

Power Dough is a great activity for any families who like a bit of craft time. The moving, sound and light up parts make it a real spectacular for kids. All the parts are easy to use as well as safe and each pack comes with batteries. A great addition to the craft cupboard!
