Post-40 Bloggers Round-up: If you read only one post…

Post40 bloggers round-upThe post I want to highlight this month came from our Education Editor, Niki Carrick-Steel. Posting in response to our writing promptTalk about phobias – Niki came up with a brand new phobia which is understandable to anyone who has children or any young person who looks up to them. I won’t reveal her new phobia as it would be interesting to see if it stops you in your tracks as it did me.

Naturally, maybe, the new phobia actually stems from a very old one – the fear of failure (Atychiphobia).

Once very familiar with this phobia myself, I understand that paralysing, vomit inducing terror that can take over before trying something new or different. That was until I realised the fearful voices were not my own. Those voices telling me I couldn’t do it belonged to voices stretching back years and years. It seemed for every year of my life I would take on the opinion of yet another person and adopt their view of my abilities straight into my belief system.

This exhausting and destructive pattern was broken only when I met my personal fitness and life coach. Talking through all the things I could not do he asked the simple question:

“Who made that true?”

I was so convinced of my uselessness that it astounded me when someone asked to see the simple proof of what I was saying. Of course I could not find that proof and there began my road to recovery. Now I examine very carefully the labels anyone wants to put on my back and accept or reject them using what I know about myself – not what another person thinks they know about me.

I wish anyone struggling in this area the strength to break free of limiting beliefs.

And, again, not spoiling the finale to Niki’s post, and not that my opinion matters, but what I have seen and heard from Niki over the last few years, I would say she has little to fear.

So, if you read only one post this month, I am recommending Niki’s post: This mum has a brand new phobia.
