My first pick of 2017 as the post you should make sure you read this month from the post-40 bloggers’ community is on the subject of anxiety.
In the post, ‘My anxiety is not attention seeking behaviour (honest),’ I was struck by Donna of Mummy Central’s powerful honesty and vulnerability. Even those of us who do not suffer from the ‘condition’ of anxiety, will be able to relate to those times we worried about people worrying about us. Or maybe we worried about what people may or may not be thinking/saying about us. But, there again, maybe the real worry is that everyone thinks our anxiety is just an attention seeking ploy or… I could go on. Because there is always something to worry about, isn’t there?
I have seen first-hand how an over-anxious mind can debilitate a life. At school, when a bully went too far with a friend of mine, she was left anxious about, well, everything. The constant overthinking was exhausting – not only for her but the people around her.
However, Donna explains that even when she tries to articulate or stick up for herself, her voice sounds either sad or pathetic or, indeed, she feels voiceless and pathetic because, as she says, “anxiety does make everything all about me. It’s my fault. I’m worthless.”
We all have anxious times sometimes, but it goes beyond that if you are a sufferer of anxiety. Donna’s post, ‘My anxiety is not attention seeking behaviour (honest),’ which takes us through one particularly bad night of overthinking, is illuminating.
