A couple of weeks ago MPs rejected a move to cut tax on sanitary products. Currently they are taxed as luxury items, well my tweet on the matter sums up how I feel about it…

A Mum’s Internal Monologue wrote about her thoughts on it here, including a link to a petition and details of International Free Flow Month. Not sure I would be brave enough to join in, but I certainly appreciate the sentiment! The Mumsnet Bloggers Network featured a guest post from Paula Sherriff, Labour MP for Dewsbury, who was the MP who tabled the rejected amendment, and she clearly explains why she tabled the amendment, expresses her disappointment at its’ rejection, but also at the positives that came from the debate.
The other big story of recent weeks was Tax Credits. Cuts to these credits are going to adversely effect around 3 million families and many of us breathed a small sigh of relief when the House Of Lords forced a re-think. Of course we are still waiting to find out what Osborne will do to adjust the level or timing of the changes, and it is a worry for all of us affected as we wait to find out if we will be able to afford to pay our rent and bills next April. This week it was Equal Pay Day, which marks the day that from now until the end of the year woman are essentially working for free. Emma and 3 looks at the ongoing gender gap in pay and the ways in which women are still disadvantaged in the work place. She also focuses on how we can empower our daughters in order that we can change things for the better.
Over at Ojo’s World she is worrying about what the country is coming to, she shares her personal experience of how cuts to the police are effecting service and personal safety, the way people are declared fit for work, the way medication is restricted, how education and care can be compromised. In the light of more cuts to budgets to be announced this month, I can’t help share her concerns.
