Politics Round-up: Pigs, new leaders and tax credits

Well. It has been quite a week in politics. Shall I mention the pig? Well. I guess I can’t not really – but like I said in my piece here , it is important to focus on what our politicians are doing right now rather than what they may have done in the past – however bizarre! Edinburgh Eye takes a fairly balanced view of the story in this post.

Away from the pigs – the other big story of recent weeks was the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour party. There was a mixed response to his landslide victory, from both within the party itself and from the media at large. Personally I think his election is a positive thing – it will lead to interesting debate on important issues, and will certainly be an end to those who say it is hard to differentiate between the two major parties. The Comeback Mum wrote an excellent post on how Corbyn’s campaign and subsequent election has kickstarted a new style of politics – from the grassroots up. And Mums The Word writes on how Corbyn gives her hope for the future – a feeling many shared across social media.

Last week the proposed changes to tax credits moved a step closer to happening. It’s Good To Be Crazy Sometimes looks at some of the figures involved in her post. What looks certain is that even with the increase to minimum wage, millions of working families are set to be worse off under the changes. The Secret Divorcee wonders how the government justify these cuts when balanced against the effect they will have on family values, something they profess to be supportive of.
