Politics Round-up: Elections, books and when to have a baby

I will start with the big political story of the past month, the recent elections which saw UKIP do well both in local council and European elections. Swazi from Chocolate Is Not The Only Fruit posted about the UKIP mini carnival near her home, and ‘exception’ reporting  just before we went to the polls. Single Mum Ahoy wrote on election day itself, about the importance of exercising your right to vote. I wrote post election on my similarities to Paul Daniels and what I would like to hear politicians saying. Cogito Ergo Mum has a radical idea – loved her tongue in cheek post about Voting for the Monarchy!

Another big talking point was Michael Gove’s changes to the GCSE syllabus book list. Head In Books argues that we need to widen the syllabus rather than create a hierarchy of worthiness with only a few books at the top. Files and Records won’t be mourning the loss of Of Mice and Men but also thinks that to engage children with books, we need more variety not less on the syllabus. And Heir Raising looks at some of the books we will lose if we ban non-UK authors from the classroom, she also takes in UKIP, Europe, and Scottish independence in her great post, which leads me nicely onto…

Scottish Independence was the theme of a BritMums politics special a couple of weeks back, do head over and read the views of three of our bloggers, and the related comments. Mummy Central was one of the bloggers who contributed, which we thank her for, and here she reflects on some of the downsides of sticking your head above the parapet with an opinion, but also on the lighter side of politics. Head In Books (yes, again, she is so good I had to include her twice!) writes a love letter (or lament) to Scotland, asking them not to go. Dad Blog UK muses on an interesting report about fatherhood produced by the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

Kirstie Allsopp got us all talking about the right time to have a baby. More Than Toast agrees with Kirstie, that having a baby early is a good way to go. Mummy Glitzer makes the important point that what we should be discussing is that women’s choices are still limited whichever way you approach it. Not Another Mummy Blog admits she wasn’t ready to have a baby when she was young, and wonders if the debate just piles more pressure on younger women.

Lastly, I found this post from The Pigeon Pair and Me on whether girls could wear pink with pride an interesting read. Should we be reclaiming pink for our daughters and making it a symbol of strength rather than attempting to outlaw it.
