Politics Round-up: #educationmatters Save The Children

It has been a busy month in the political arena- America has shut itself down, it has been party conference season, there was a fairly major press vs politicians spat, and all sorts of other bits and bobs have been going on. As such please bear with there not being a cohesive theme to this round-up.

I will start with some blogs that have given their time and space to highlight some important campaign:-

Thinly Spread is at the forefront of the latest Save The Children campaign – #educationmatters , her wonderful post about the importance of reading for children is one of many great posts on the topic this week. Please do have a read, and get involved in their attempts to ensure all children, from all backgrounds get the opportunity to learn to love books.

Last month I touched on the Saatchi Bill as at the point of going to press a team of bloggers were heading into the Houses of Parliament to find out more about it. I Heart Motherhood was one of those involved, find out more about the bills proposals and why it means so much to her.

Mary at Keynko writes about the ongoing battle to free the Greenpeace activists who are being held in Russia on false charges of piracy. It means more to her than most as she has a personal friend caught up in the situation, but I think the majority of us can see that the charges are not appropriate. You can join over a million others, including myself, in sending an email the Russian Ambassador to object to the peaceful protestors incarceration.

This heartbreaking post from Gammon and Chips asks for your support in a campaign to shut down Ask.FM. Those of you with teenagers will be familiar with the name of this site, a hub for trolls and bullies, and considered a major factor in the suicides of nine young people this year, and sadly number ten on that list was a young girl, Izzy Dix, a family friend of Maddie who writes Gammon and Chips. After reading this post, my own teenager deactivated her account, and I signed the petition calling for it’s closure. Lets not lose any more young people to such vile online hatred.

• Not My Year Off wrote a fabulous letter to Mr Gove.
• Head In Book looks at the options for young people with the threat of the removal of benefits.
• This post from Chocolate Is Not The Only Fruit is a little older, but seems relevant in a week when we have seen the outstanding Malala Yousafzai in the press again, and looks at how we can all be inspired to be a little braver in our feminism thanks to Malala.
• Green Mum’s Blog tackles the issue of free school meals and questions ‘Is there really such a thing as a free lunch?’
• Single Mum Ahoy looks at the issues facing single parents in the job market.
