Education Round-up: Handprinted alphabets, lava lamps & rumours

Hello and welcome to the October Education Roundup. It’s a real mix of a Roundup this month, with some great ideas on fun ways to do a little educating of your off-spring yourself, along with some musings and ponderings about education from a parent’s perspective.

Check out Red Ted Art’s Handprint Alphabet, what a great way to reinforce the alphabet with preschoolers, whilst also having lots of colourful, squidgy fun!

Now, I wish that I had had Kerry or Emma from Science Sparks as my Chemistry teacher at school. I am sure I’d have made way more headway than the terminally dull Mr Bayes and his crew. Love this post about how to make a Lava Lamp.

Over on Mari’s World, Mari’s children’s new primary school has been doing a little parental educating to complement the educating of reception class children. Mari details the three workshops parents have attended on foundation reading, phonics and maths. Interesting reading for parents with children at the same level, but also for parents whose children are next in line to start primary school.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been talked about in the media of late about her edict that her children only watch TV in French or Spanish. Slightly scary perhaps, but maybe there is at least a seed of method in her madness. Here’s a guest post from Nikki at StressyMummy.com on Ma Puce about the many benefits of children learning a second language such as French.

There’s some great practical advice in ‘Are You Just Starting Out Home Educating?’ from Ross Mountney for anyone who has recently embarked on Home Educating their child/ren. In fact, it is the kind of advice that any parent trying to impart any level of educational wisdom to their child could do with reading.

I know school is ultimately all about the kids, but it is good to take a moment to remember what us parents have to go through whilst our children make their way through the education system. ‘Teething Troubles’ by Jodie at Mummy Cool gives us the opportunity to do just that.

Deb at Aspie In The Family has blogged ‘Rumour Has It’ the issues she is having with the powers that be as she tries to ensure her son (who has an ASD) and daughter (who has Asperger Syndrome) receive a good education – the education that they deserve.

‘Hate Hate Hate It’ by (Mostly)YummyMummy focuses on the sheer volume of homework her six year old daughter is being set and how it eats into precious family time. I have to say I agree with Mostly, at six years old the majority of schoolwork should surely be done during school hours, downtime where children can just ‘be’ is so important. I’d love to know what everyone else’s thoughts are on this, so do leave a comment and enlighten me!

I love, love, love (see what I did there?!) this ‘Mapping The Locality’ post from Annie Hall at Help Your Child To Learn. This is one of those great educational ideas that will no doubt end up educating the parent almost as much as the child.
