Mums & Tots Round-up: Dealing with a fussy eater

I recently learned a really interesting fact about toddlers and their sudden aversion to certain foods. Apparently it all comes down to an innate behaviour from our ancestors, when young children would roam free in the woods. As we will all know, toddlers love nothing more than to put just about anything in their mouths, so as a protective mechanism from poisonous berries they will avoid fruit and veg! Isn’t that fascinating?

Of course that doesn’t help us when it comes to trying to get good food into their tummies does it? A once brilliant eater will suddenly refuse whole food groups and this can make mealtimes one big headache.

Bridie By The Sea shares a long list of ways her toddler’s fussy ways – I am sure we can all relate to them and nod along! Messy Blog also shares her story and openly admits to being smug before, seeing others with fussy eaters – but now she is living with a fussy eater!

Sometimes there really doesn’t seem any rhyme or reason to it all and Nicola from Nicola Says has been sharing a few tips for dealing with a fussy toddler. I think the best being to not give in to the easy option all the time.

Bubba Blue and Me has some brilliant tips for avoiding a fussy child, sharing what she did through the weaning stage that worked for her. Always good to hear success stories isn’t it?

I was one of the smug ones, Gracie was and still is an amazing eater but Lils is another kettle of fish entirely. She is starting to pick out onions from spaghetti bolognese and pick out the filling from her sandwiches. I will be using these tips myself – wish me luck!

Have you got any tips to share or are you living with a fussy eater?

Next month I will be sharing tips for taking toddlers on holiday. If you have a post to share then pop me an email to katy@whatkatysaid.com or tweet me @whatkatysaiduk.

Thank you so much for featuring me! We are slowly getting better with the fussy eating but it is a frustrating road! Some brilliant posts to read in the round-up too xx

Thanks for featuring my post. Annoyingly, as N has got older he has got more picky about food. Although does generally eat when there's no other choice after making a protest.

I think that is key actually, not giving too much choice. x

My son has been a fussy eater since he was around 15 months old. He was very poorly with chicken pox and it all went down hill from there. Slowly and I mean SLOWLY we have increased his selection of food but even at 6 years old he still doesn't have a very varied diet

Chicken Pox seems to cause all sorts of upsets doesn't it? It really messed up potty training for us for months I seem to remember. I was a terrible eater as a child but as I've aged my taste buds have matured and I eat most things so I wouldn't worry too much xx
