Education Round-Up: Reading, supporting & venting

Hello and welcome to June’s BritMums Education Round-Up. There’s a wide array of education related subjects being blogged about over the last month, here’s a selection that will give you good cause to settle down with a large cuppa and have a damned good read:

There’s been a lot of blogging about reading and the art of teaching children the joy of reading this month.

Erica at 92three30 offers a jolly useful overview of primary school reading schemes. It all just looks like a bunch of numbers and letters to me, but then my child is still only 2, so I have time to get my head around it…

Now, I’m sneaking in a little transatlantic blogging action here, because I read this post and thought, “this is useful stuff”. Mom (mum!!) and teacher, Samantha, at Have Sippy Will Travel talks us through tips on getting the most out of, what they call in the States, Parent Teacher conferences, but what I believe we call Parents’ Evenings.

There is plenty of concern about recent changes to the education system, both with the advent of academies and free schools:

And just to keep us all focused on what education really should be about, Julia, an ex-headmistress, who blogs at The Head’s Office tells us why the purpose of education is to burn brightly

Julia, making full use of her leadership skills, has also started up the marvellous 100 Word Challenge for children and adults alike. The 100 Word Challenge is growing fast. It makes full use of blogging and linking to help children, in particular, feel there is a purpose to their writing. Take a look, this is truly inspirational stuff.
