Good Reads: Road rage, contraception & making sure our kids are millionaires

Hello from a very soggy me this week. I’ve stupidly decided to cycle to work (epic MOT fail – my car that is, not me,) and I’ve got soaked every day. Still, at least I’ll have buns of steel by the time BritMums Live comes around – you can all check if you like. Especially you. Yeah, you at the back.

So here begins my roundup of the best blog posts around this fortnight!

I was really curious to learn more about the campaign that Dove have begun to advertise on TV and Emma and Three has also picked up on this in Being a Role Model. Being a teacher, Emma is very aware of the importance of being a role model. The findings of a survey that Dove have recently carried out to find out the top role model for young girls is was really interesting. Guess who comes out at number one?!

Lewis from Babberblog has had a baby. Well, his wife has, and he’s petrified of dropping him. I certainly remember that feeling, I just put on a good show of pretending to look like I knew what I was doing. He’s totally right. Parenting is petrifying.

Brink of Bedlam wrote a beautiful post entitled A Walk in the Rain. Kinda self explanatory but it’s a wonderfully written piece explaining how she walks off the frustration of every day life and it gives her the space, and energy, to come back home and deal with it all over again.

Amy from And 1 More Means Four (or is it five – I’ve lost track,) is a goose. A very lovely one at that. She’s written about her monthlies … don’t worry, it’s not that gory. You know how curious children are, right? And you know how they all love cramming into the same toilet cubicle as you, right? You know where I’m going with this … right?

I may have mentioned from time to time that I may be partial to a leeeeetle road rage from time to time … hey, I’m only human, but after reading MotherGeek’s post about road rage, I promise I’ll limit my rage to the usual eclectic mix of made up swear words and nothing more. The incident she witnessed sounded very scary.

It’s Dexter’s 8th birthday soon and we’ve already written a list of who he wants to invite, what games they’ll play and every single item of food he wants. I’m exhausted already. But at least he didn’t want a swimming party. Welcome to Tales of Stepford’s, and my, worst nightmare because that’s exactly what she’s let herself in for. I’m sending her cyber gin as we speak.

Ruth from This Lemonade Life reminds us how easy it is to have confusing conversations with your children. I know exactly what she means. Especially first thing in the morning. In Four Candles, she explains how a conversation with her daughter ended in tears … but she also reminds us of a very funny sketch from The Two Ronnies … not that I’m old enough to remember them, obviously.

Random Rantings of a Tattooed Mummy is … ranting again. This time about a recent news article about how free contraception is being given to 13 year old girls. She raises some interesting and very valid points. Sex and love are SO not the same thing.

Keith from Chronicles of a Reluctant Housedad has joined in with Kate’s Listography again and this week’s is a goodie. In Top 5 Wishes for My Children, Keith wants what we all want for our kids. That they become millionaires so they can look after us in our old age. Amen.

And finally, Nikki from StressyMum cries a lot. Now, I’m double hard and only cry when I see children sing on TV or at any show with Noel Edmonds in it. It’s a weird Christmas/Mum thing. Long story. Anyway, Nikki isn’t afraid to admit that she’s a massive cry baby. So that’s the country’s drought problems sorted.

Right, American Idol’s on and that packet of wine gums won’t eat itself. Have a great fortnight everyone – I’m off to Brighton with my BFF next Friday. If I don’t make it back … don’t bother sending a search party.
