We talk about how we can motivate our kids to get active, but how do our children get us moving and healthy? In a sponsored programme with Disney, BritMums bloggers explore how families can get fitter and more active using Disney characters for inspiration.

Disney recently launched its DisneyHealthyLiving.co.uk website, supporting families making healthy choices. BritMums has been promoting its #HealthilyEverAfter campaign, along with key bloggers, as part of a sponsored project. Here, we share their stories, tips and advice (all opinions are those of the participating bloggers).

With school and sports clubs, our children have no shortage of sports and activities to choose from. Usually the benefit we parents get from these is an hour sitting down with the newspaper, or a moment with coffee and cake in a sports field cafe. Getting started can be a painful (and sometimes embarrassing) process.

But if you’re prepared to shake off inhibitions, fun and fitness can be yours, says SuperBusyMum. So what if your child’s feet get wet? So what if other people stare while you are pretending to be Jungle Book’s King Louie on the climbing frame? The point is that you are out with your kids enjoying yourselves.

Mummymummymum and Steph from Steph’s Two Girls both used Frozen to energise their families, with Steph’s whole family ice-skating and playing a little light snow cricket – no, we hadn’t heard of it either. Check out the video on her post to see what it’s like.

“Having children has most definitely made me get outside and be more active generally,” says Mummymummymum. “Weekends that were once spent shopping and drinking coffee in Starbucks are now filled with muddy walks, bike rides and trips to the park.”

Podcast’s daughter “has developed a love for the outdoors and she’s taught us a great deal over the past five years. Like ignoring the weather forecast on a quest to chase rainbows at the beach!” as she transforms herself into Tinkerbell on a hunt for fairy dust at the smallest opportunity.

Elsewhere, Vevivos took inspiration from the wise words of Ratatouille’s Remy: “Your only limit is your soul” to start a family karate class and taking part in her, her husband and daughter’s first Park Run – “we were all there for each other, supporting and cheering each other on”.

But prize for the most committed and inspired blogger must surely go to the Family Adventure Project. Kirstie and her extended family made a splendid tribute to “Up” for their village carnival as an all-family activity. They all pulled together – from a teenage cousin volunteering to play the part of a cloud to an assortment of aunts and uncles blowing up balloons – and it is little wonder that her son won the fancy dress prize. As Walt Disney himself said: “Laughter is timeless and imagination has no age.”

Great article. No family should ever feel awkward at starting or embarrassed at perusing physical activities with their children. Within western societies obesity is increasing and whilst evidence linking childhood obesity and adult obesity is generally poor, common sense dictates that getting into healthy habits young can only be of benefit and will certainly be slot of fun. I love mucky walks in the park with my son more than anything! Diet however is another important facet of fitness. My experience with patients is that there is alot of confusion born out of conflicting messages and pseudoscience in the media. I have and will continue to publish down to earth food science and easy home cook meals on my website www.workingfamilyfood.com keep up the good work! P.s. sorry, I'm a dad- hope you don't mind the comment!
