The EU referendum is just a couple of weeks away now. Have you decided which way to vote? I think it is very hard to find unbiased facts, with both sides constantly contradicting each other. I am voting on gut instinct, as are many others I know.
One friend on social media suggest we vote according to our belly buttons – are you an innie or an outie? Probably not the best approach for a serious issue, but it did make me laugh, and speaking of making me laugh, Mad House Mum’s re-working of the Okey-Cokey raised a smile here as well. Dad Blog UK has been talking Brexit with his seven year old, have you discussed the issue with your children?
On the parenting front, the story of the little boy who got into a gorilla enclosure, resulting in the gorilla being killed to keep the child safe, got lots of us talking. Many of us felt that the vilifying of the child’s parents was a bit harsh, with us all being capable of taking our eye off the ball for a moment, and often a moment is long enough.
Just Because I Love looks at all the little decisions we have to make as parents, that could go wrong, but usually don’t – none of us are perfect parents, we are all just doing our best. Our World and Autism looks at how quick we can all be to judge others actions. Like Real Life ponders on our quick judgement of the parents and her uncertain feelings about zoos in general.
The case of Brock Turner, the Stanford University student recently sentenced to just six months in jail for assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster has attracted lots of news coverage – both for his father’s defence of the sentence and because of the brave and brilliant words of Turner’s victim. Mummy Says focusses on the victim’s eloquent statement – hoping that by sharing her words we could reach a place where ‘our daughters are never blamed for not being able to say yes or no.’ Glosswatch questions whether the outrage we feel does anything to help victims? Every now and then there will be a particular case that generates outrage across the world, but it hasn’t yet led to a holistic challenge to rape culture.
