There were some elections held last week, and as usual the turn-out was rather poor. I ponder why in my post, and wonder if the promise of a biscuit would encourage more to turn out.
Man Vs Pink discussed the importance of fostering an interest in politics in our children and making sure they understand the importance of voting.
Last week also saw some parents choose to keep their children off school in order to demonstrate their unhappiness at the current SATs system. Nikki Young Writes wrote about her reasons for joining the strike, and she also provided an update as to how the day itself went. Not Even A Bag of Sugar discusses why she chose not to keep her son home, despite being in agreement with many of the reasons behind the strike. Chelsea Mamma disagreed with the strike – she feels that the exams are a normal part of education, and that they are part of life and a skill that needs to be learned. Penny Alexander was interviewed by Alice Langley for BritMums on why she kept her children home as a protest on May 3rd.
Football has been a big talking point this month. After a 27-year wait for justice, jurors recently concluded that the deaths of the 96 at the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 were unlawful, exonerating supporters of any blame. Football teams and fans across the world showed their support to those who lost their lives, those who were injured and their families. This past week also saw an unexpected team lifting the Premier League trophy – well done to Leicester – Sarah at Mum Of Three World shares her delight at this result for her team. There are also big celebrations at The Frugal Family house, as their team, Middlesbrough, have secured promotion to the Premier League next season.
And finally we also lost another couple of legends this month – what is going on this year?! I loved Victoria Wood – I always thought she would make the best Auntie – so warm and genuinely hilarious – Nickie at Typecast shares her own memories in her tribute. And then the very next day we heard that Prince had left the planet too, I hope he is making an extraordinary noise with Bowie somewhere – Chocolate Is Not The Only Fruit shares her love of the Purple One – and check out some of the videos, such supreme musicianship!
