Family Fun Day at McDonald's on BritMumsFamily life can be busy and it’s tough fitting in quality time with the kids, especially over summer and school holidays.

At our #FamilyGoodTimes Twitter conversation, sponsored by McDonald’s UK, we talked about how mums and dads squeeze in family time and create family fun whilst juggling hectic lives.

McDonald’s UK is raising awareness of the free, family-focussed events at McDonald’s restaurants across the UK. Family Fun Days are jam-packed with activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family, such as balloon modelling, face painting, board games and more. McDonald’s also offers Character Visits, where kids can meet characters from their favourite Happy Meals Events, play games and get their photos and autographs. In years to come our children won’t remember how clean the house was, or how much money you had. They won’t remember the times you lost your cool or said no but they will remember all the fun times they had with you and how you made them feel! 

To me quality time means moments we will treasure and look back on and smile. They don’t need to be recorded in pictures or written down they are memories we hold in our heart that will stick with us forever as a memory!

Keeping kids engaged during meal times

[We spend time] with a good old family chat started by a simple “how was your day? @V82Chris

We read together every evening and after a fun day out, our girls have quiet time in their rooms relaxing whilst I prepare dinner! We then sit and chat at the dinner table @AllumsAdventure

Sometimes we play “Mad, Sad, Glad”, where everyone has to name something that made them mad, sad & glad that day. Very enlightening! @JHowze

Making sure we are present! Leaving behind distractions like mobile phones etc and letting the kids take control of what we do! @Tantrums2Smiles 

No phones,tablets or tv while eating…If they eat everythin they can have tv etc play computer for a few hours @KayAdeola

Family Fun Indoors

I think mine use the tablets and phones because they have nothing to do. As soon as we start playing a game, they all go out the window which is fab. They’re not missed. @V82Chris

I love Monopoly, and classics like Hide and Seek! @Isis1981UK

I used to love Snakes and Ladders so much! My sister and I must have played it hundreds of times and we never got bored with it @Heidi_Howlett

Our favourite traditional games are: Connect 4, Scrabble, Monopoly, hopscotch, hide and seek! Jenga! Downfall! Mousetrap! We have all the classics… boxes are battered and squashed! Well loved! @AllumsAdventures

I think it’s important not to put too much pressure on yourself as a parent. Fun can be spontaneous and cheap – you don’t need to pre-plan too much or spend a fortune… @missielizzieb

I have a little bag in the cupboard with bits in that they can choose from when they have been really good. Things like little pots of slime, activity books, gel pens! It’s definitely something my kids love! @Tantrums2Smiles

Then the kids make a list each in the hols and we try and fit in as much as possible! They are still quite young so no major demands yet!! @KEEccles

I used to love walking, particularly with my Dad, who knew so much about nature and later with my brother. Always enjoyed clambering over stiles too @Kateonthinice

We went to @McDonaldsUK spur of the moment, ended up at a Family Fun Day we didn’t even know about. The biggest difference I’ve seen in McDonald’s is that these days you can go and get healthy food just as easily as the treats! Plus the calories in everything is listed to make good choices @BusinessMum

All of the above but also just for random treats – I also LOVE McDs so it’s no chore… My only bugbear is that my fave (a filet of fish) isn’t about 3 X as big! I could definitely eat a GIANT filet! @rocknrollerbaby

What could McDonald’s do better?

Fish finger options!  Having a fussy eater this would make a visit so much easier! @topsy1973

In my mind it would be great if McDonald offered gluten-free options and dairy-free milk in coffee, gluten-free bun options are available in Austria, Finland, Denmark, Spain but not in UK’s McDonald’s @Vicenta21

Agree…gluten-free options would make it eaiser for me to join in…I’m happy with the coffee while my boys eat, but I do miss the burgers…and those wraps look so tasty! @SarahDew17

[When I was young] it was the best thing ever if you were chosen by the birthday child to join them on a guided tour of the kitchen. I’m not sure if health and safety would allow that now though @NEFamilyFun
