Photo Round-up: Kids with cameras

This month’s theme is kids with cameras. I’d like to introduce you to an event being held by one of my bride’s sisters. It’s called Toddle in the City and it’s a fantastic day out with your little one, helping them explore London with a camera. I absolutely love this idea. There are loads of dates coming up for you to do a Toddle, including this weekend. At the end of all the Toddles, I’ll be helping Yat, who is an urban designer, to choose the images for an exhibition at the Greenwich Maritime to celebrate the way our children see the world. Get involved! This is FANTASTIC (and I’m sure it would make a really great blog post for you, too).

On this topic, I was curious to see if anyone else around the world had posted about children taking photographs. I found this great post by photographer Robby Barthelmess who went to Thailand to teach children how to take pictures. The kids look like they are having a fantastic time. There are further posts here and here.

This is another short post from photographer Randy Plett who took cameras with him to East Africa. I liked the two photos, so thought I’d include it.

And then, of course, I happened upon the Best Documentary Feature in the 77^th Academy Awards, Born into Brothels, in which children of Indian sex workers were given cameras and taught to document their lives. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see the images that the children took because the site seems to be infected, but you can purchase the DVD here.

Rwanda is a country that is close to my heart, as my husband’s uncle lives and works there and I spent some time there 6 years ago. I found this project by photographer Kresta King.

Finally, here is an amazing project by photographer Klaus Schoenwiese in Zambia, which also tells each of the children’s stories. Very powerful.
