Health Round-up: Sickness, MOTs & dreaded hay fever

health round upDid everyone enjoy celebrating Father’s Day at the weekend? How about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this month?

To tell you the truth, the jubilee sort of passed me by. It wasn’t that I wasn’t interested. I got sick. Horribly sick. It’s one of those things that’s just not allowed when you’ve got children! You can read all about when sickness strikes over on my blog, Chez Mummy.

I think Mummy from the Heart has the right idea; she’s been for a health MOT. While such things may not make you less sickly, as Michelle points out they can be useful for highlighting health issues that you can then do something about.

The one good thing about the timing of my illness was that it seemed to coincide with the last week of rain. It was so nice to feel better and have the sun shining at the same time. However, the sun can bring its own set of problems. Hay fever is a major one; I’ve seen so many tweets from people on twitter suffering big-time this year, especially a few who are pregnant and can’t take antihistamines like the majority of us. Thankfully, it’s Modern Mummy to the rescue! She has written about pregnancy friendly hay fever cures. Something I didn’t know is that you apparently have to start building up your immunity six whole months in advance – six months!

Yummy Mummy? Really? has also written a very interesting post, asking if the current lack of sun cause more cases of rickets in the UK. Although this post was written back at the start of May, the issue of rickets is a pertinent one whether the sun is shining or not. Rickets is caused by a lack of vitamin D and the main source of this for our bodies is the sun. Whether it’s the clouds blocking out the sun’s rays or high factor sun lotion, it’s certainly something we should be aware of.

Now, unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, I’m sure you’ve heard about Jack Osbourne being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 26. It’s something that Cathy over at Licking the Honey understands only too well. She was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting MS in February 2010 and blogs about living with the condition.

And finally, I stumbled upon a post written by Emily at A Mummy Too back in April about eczema. My brother used to get this terribly when he was younger and both of my children are prone to dry, eczema-like rashes behind their knees and on the inside of their elbows. Does anyone know a magic cure?

That’s it for another month. The only thing I have to do now is to try and not get too sick with nerves or excitement about BritMums Live! which starts tomorrow – eek! Will I see you there? I hope so. [editor’s note – sorry I’m late publishing!]

As ever, please add any health-related posts into the linky below.
