British cherries are a thing of beauty: rich red, wonderfully delicious, and they come in a number of varieties. Another thing about British cherries — we discovered in our project sponsored by British Cherries — is that families and children adore them.

“Mmmm, sooooo delicious! I love how juicy and sweet they are!”, said Mummy Mayhem’s daughter Honey. “We sat around brainstorming all the ways we could incorporate cherries into our days out, recipes and activities to make the most of them…
BUT…
We all decided in the end, that the best way to enjoy these juicy Cherry beauties was simply to sit at home, in our garden and savour their taste!”
The benefits of cherries & varieties
You can get your hands on a number of varieties that ripen at different times. ‘Mercant’ cherries are available early in the season and can be distinguished by their dark red skin and large size, followed by others including exclusive English variety ‘Penny’, and ‘Kordia’ and ‘Sweetheart’, which ripens towards the end of the season.
As Sophie’s Nursery says, they are packed with vitamin C (100g provides 25% of the RDA of vitamin C), are a rich source of melatonin (which helps promote healthy sleep patterns). Plus, they make pies like her gorgeous Fresh Cherry Pie recipe.
“My family LOVE this fresh cherry pie recipe & we regularly take it with us on a summer picnic.” (She also confides: “My black forest meringue cake is the perfect showstopper at a party.”)

“Not only do cherries taste great, they are also a great source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, including potassium, calcium, vitamin A and folic acid,” says Mummy vs Work. “They are also a great antioxidant.” If you could eat vitamins in these Cherry Brownies, wouldn’t you?

“It is so difficult to get goodness into your children in the school holidays (or at any time),” says The Scenic Route to Sanity. “We have enjoyed cherries as a snack, in a smoothie with strawberries and banana, in ice cream and we made a cherry and apple crumble with our leftover cherries.” Her crumble looks to die for.

More delicious ways to eat cherries
All of the Influencers received cherry de-stoners, which make eating them easier than ever — however you like them — plus it makes cherries especially safe for the kiddies. Using it is fun in itself and prepping the fruit for recipes is a breeze. Here are some of the way Influencers love to eat cherries:
We love Welsh Mum‘s Top 5 simple ways to enjoy fresh cherries. We especially want to try the cherry ice lollies and overnight cherry oats.

Feed Felix Fast has a great tip for eating fresh cherries: “Stick your cherries in a bath of iced water, lay in the garden and eat them one by one all to yourself. They were so refreshing and made even better by nobody asking to share.” She also has a Gluten- and Dairy-Free Chocolate and Cherry Cake recipe that makes free-from look full-on.

Probably the best reason to eat cherries
Bizzimummy perhaps provides one of the most compelling reasons we should all be enjoying British cherries: “Izebella says she prefers cherries to sweets and it shows on her little face!”
