This month I have mostly been getting scared.
That’s a bit weird I know, but two reasons:
- I went ski-ing, and I am s**t-scared of that
- I worked from home, with my kids there. Normally I only work when they are in some form of childcare, whether its friends, school or holiday club. Somehow though they managed to persuade me it would be a good idea to “try it out.”
The ski-ing bit went quite well, for the kids at least, as I say on KiddyCharts; though ski-ing for me will always be something that other people do from now on, as Stickers, Stars and Smiles explains.
As for the working with my kids with me….I think I shall have to write about that one next month.
However, I suspected I wasn’t the only one try to manage work alongside kiddy-time, though perhaps most of you were quite so scared about doing it. Some of your posts suggest that this is the case. Grenglish has a letter to her employer about the morning she spent with her son. I so remember the times I had to compose myself in the care before going to work after similar drop offs, and Cambridge Mummy has managed to come up with social media campaigns to die for while looking after a sick 4-year old and finally Diary of a Frugal Family has a great post discussing how much time we spend on our computers. This is a major problem for me, and I know I need to tackle it. Her suggestion of 15 minutes outside with the kids a day is a great one, inspired by The Boy and Me, and something that I intend on following through on too.
Every one of us is being more than “just a mum,” whether we are a stay at home mum, or a working parent, sometimes it pays to remember what it is that makes us who we are, make us “me”. Three Years and Home talks about this beautifully on her blog, and this inspired some other posts across the blogosphere including those from Mum of Three and Confessions of a Mumpreneur.
Crystal Jigsaw almost certainly knows who she is, and where she is at the moment, knee deep in lambing, or earlier in the month she was anyway. This post gives an excellent insight into something that I hadn’t really thought about beforehand, that the joys of lambing are tempered by the losses that you get along the way.
Finally, there will have been many of us this week who have had to go back to work after time off, just like Johnson’s Babies, and I bet there was a pretty pile of crap, perhaps similar to the stuff Crystal Jigsaw may have been wading through this week, to get done now wasn’t there?
About Helen Neale
Helen is the editor of the working parents round up, a freelance writer and owner of personalised children's chart business, KiddyCharts. She was a business analyst, and then a tweed-skirted school librarian as she tried to find work that fitted in with the demands of motherhood. Mummy's Little Stars is where you will find her sometimes funny musings about life as a working parent, and mum to some over exuberant small people. She has only been blogging since January 2012, so go gentle with her; she might break. You can find Helen on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn; where she probably hangs out a bit too much.
