Unmissable Christmas Classic Films

Nothing beats watching Christmas films to get you festive and we like to start early in this house. I’ve actually been known to watch Elf in the summer. What? It’s genius.

Here are my picks of unmissable classic flicks this Christmas.

Its a Wonderful Life

 

(1946)

Frank Capra’s moral tale of redemption is the feel good classic of the century.  Get the tissues ready!

Home Alone

(1990)

Watching this first as a kid around the same age as Macauley, this is now a two generations old family classic we will never bore of. I’m actually excited that my nearly 4 year old will be able to watch it this year and understand it! Still relevant, still funny and will make you laugh and cry in equal amounts! KKEEEVVVVINNN!

Elf

(2003)

Will Ferrell’s break out movie that has become a must-see festive film for all. A human raised by elves must find his father and bring home the message of Christmas. My son recently asked for maple syrup over his pasta. I blame Buddy.

Bugsy Malone

(1975)

I need no excuse to watch this family favourite EVER. I’ve even recently started singing My Name is Tallulah and Bugsy to my son before bedtime so this classic take on the gangster story with an all child cast, will be enjoyed this year for sure. I adore it!

Trading Places

(1983)

Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) is made to trade places with homeless guy Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) as part of a wager. I always watch this movie with my Dad (who likes to give me a running commentary throughout). A  funny, festive fable.

White Christmas

(1954)

It’s not Christmas as we know it without Bing Crosby’s classic ringing in our ears- and this is the best well film it features in (despite first being sung in the movie Holiday Inn in 1942).

Scrooge

 

(1951)

The famous drama adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, with the epic Alistair Sim, this should be on your Christmas film list for sure.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

(1992)

Legendary Michael Caine joins the mental Muppets for this hysterical take on classic Scrooge (different to the one above, of course!).

Miracle on 34th Street

(1947)

Susan Walker (Natalie Wood) believes that Macy’s Father Christmas Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwen) is real-aww. If you haven’t seen this yet, do so this Christmas.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

(1993)

Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town but doesn’t quite understand it. A dark Tim Burton tale, perfect pre Christmas Day viewing.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

(1989)

Brilliantly predictable, laugh out loud (will make even your worst Christmas days feel good) kind of film. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase)’s family Christmas goes wrong, over and over again. Love it.
