I’m a big fan of city breaks. Whether in the UK or abroad, a few days away experiencing the architecture, culture and food of a bustling city can be just as invigorating as a longer holiday. As a family, some of our best trips have involved cities and our son, Rory, from an early age, started to appreciate art and history because of long weekends in cities such as Rome, Berlin and Copenhagen.
The posts this month feature cities at home and in Europe. Leeds Dad can kick us off with a day trip to London which had its high and low points. I think it’s fair to say, he would definitely plan things better next time around. Maybe he should have checked the regular Things to do in London with Kids by Mums Do Travel for some family friendly ideas.
48 hours in the city of Chester was perfect for a romantic weekend, according to Tracey from William’s World but equally you could spend a fascinating 48 hours in Belfast with the children in tow, if you follow the suggestions from A Family Day Out. There’s also plenty of inspiration from Tin Box Traveller who has listed 5 Cardiff family attractions not to be missed.
You might think Venice is more for couples but it has a great deal to offer families. Travel With My Kids has advice for accommodation, food and things to see in her post, Venice with kids. Families are just as well provided for in Turin, according to Tots2Travel, particularly the cuisine, as pizza, chocolate and gelato feature prominently in What to do with kids in Turin.
Whilst I’m drooling over the thought of the delicious Italian food, Family Life in Spain is keeping my taste buds perked with her 6 tips for a tasty trip to Madrid and Suitcases and Sandcastles goes one better with her mouth-watering Seven foodie treats to try in Lisbon.
If it’s art or things a bit quirky you’re after, Lou Messugo recommends you nip over to France and visit Nantes and its fabulous giant elephant. Yes, really!
You can’t go to Amsterdam and not have a go on a bike so Cycle Sprog has some excellent information about How to hire a kid’s bike in Amsterdam. If you prefer to walk on your city break, The Pigeon Pair and Me found Oslo to be a perfectly sized city to explore on foot and you can also walk on the roof of its Opera House: Seven relaxing things to do in Oslo.
Finally, My Travel Monkey has a whopping 17 things to do in Reykjavik with kids. Thankfully one of those is a relaxing dip in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon.
If you need more inspiration for your city breaks there is a great travel linky, #CityTripping, run every Tuesday by Mummy Travels and Wander Mum. You will find some fantastic posts from bloggers across the globe, sharing their love of urban exploration.
No theme as yet for next month’s travel round-up but please send me links to your recent travel posts so I can share with BritMums readers next time. Find me on Twitter @mumsgoneto or via my blog, Mum’s Gone To…
About Trish Burgess
Trish Burgess started her blog ‘Mum’s Gone To…’ with a series of posts called ‘Mum's Gone To Iceland' where she was extremely ill on a whale-watching trip and thought she would die snow-mobiling on a glacier. Thankfully she survived and continued with less scary family trips: ‘Mum’s Gone To…Canada, Cyprus, Barcelona, Berlin etc. Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne she now lives in South Lincolnshire and travels with her husband and occasionally with her son, who is now at university. Hey Trish, love the blog. As you don't have a destination for next month, have you thought about San Sebastian in the Basque Country, Spain? As it is this year's European City of Culture there is lots going on and next month they have an international jazz festival which is surprisingly child friendly. The whole pintxos thing also makes food interesting for adults and children, although the amazing, cheap wine is more a treat for the adults.
