Three things I’m looking forward to at #BML16: It’s all about the voices

#BML16 is fast approaching and I for one can’t wait to get there.

The beauty of the event is that there is so much packed into the day, there is something for everyone no matter what your objectives are, whether you are a seasoned pro or a blogging novice. Last year was my first blogging event of any kind. I had never so much as met another parent blogger in person before arriving. ‘Terrified’ does not even begin to do justice to how I felt – but I loved every minute of it.

So, as a returning veteran, here are the three things I am most looking forward to on June 25th.

1. Novelist Amanda Jennings’ ‘Finding your voice’ writing workshop (11:15am). I’m always drawn to sessions which focus more on writing as opposed to blogging or social media. This practical session promises to explore what a writer’s voice is, the distinction between style and voice and how you can develop your own distinctive voice.

2. The bloggers’ keynote session. This session comes late in the day (4:45pm) but it’s well worth persevering for. As powerful as it is to read a well-written blog post, it’s doubly so to hear one read by its author in their own voice. Last year’s keynotes moved the entire audience to laughter and tears in turn and inspired me to start my own weekly podcast featuring other bloggers.

3. Yes, there are all the formal sessions and these are a great way to improve your blogging skills or to explore new opportunities. But, more than anything, I love the social side of events. Even if you’re a complete newbie who doesn’t know anyone, you will not be alone. Many delegates at #BML16 will be first-timers and even grizzled veterans are happy to say hi and have a chat. Don’t be shy – just go for it. Everyone who is at #BML16 has blogging in common and we are all interested in the stories we each have to tell. And I promise you this: once you have met a blogger and heard their voice in person, you will view their posts in a completely different light thereafter.

To find out a little more about me ahead of the big day, you can read my post I’m going to #BML16. And do come up and introduce yourself if you see me. I won’t be difficult to spot in the crowd!

About Tim Liew

Tim, also known as @thatchamdad, is a blogger, a podcaster, a father of three (aged 11, 9 and 7) and a master of none. By his own admission he’s forever stuck somewhere in the mid-1980s, probably a Thursday. In between bouts of nostalgia, complaining about his aching joints and compiling endless music playlists, he has been writing about his experiences as a working dad on his blog Slouching towards Thatcham since 2008.
