Cheetahs in My Shoes

“Cheetahs in my Shoes” is based entirely on the stories of The Cheetah Keeper who, in order to make sense of the chaos that is life and his assorted medical problems, all of a sudden, discovered a pair of (imaginary) cheetahs living in his trainers. These cheetahs have subsequently bred, travelled, invited friends to stay and continue to provide us with a way of getting through what being 4 brings.
I’m a mummy, not a medical expert in anyway, so what I write about our medical conditions is how I understand them and how they affect us. They are by no means meant as a source of fact – but I hope what I write may help others in the same boat. I’m becoming more and more interested in how children in long term pain or discomfort or under long term stress use imaginary play and imaginary friends to help them cope – so let me know if you have any ideas, clues or thoughts on the matter… please.

My name is Laura. I’m in my early thirties – yes, that’s as much as I’m giving away – and I live near London. I have been with my wonderful, patient husband for what seems like an eternity (but definitely in a good way) and am a mother of two young children, Sophia and Dexter (names have been changed to protect the innocent!). Sophia is three-years-old while Dexter arrived last year. My life literally hasn’t been the same since they joined our family.
I decided to pen this blog to share my thoughts and experiences about being a parent and the joys and frustrations that go hand-in-hand with the job. As well as being a mummy (incidentally, the best ‘job’ I’ve ever had), I also work in PR and hold down a full-time job. Add to that the task of trying to keep a house clean and tidy while living through the biggest house renovation I’ve ever known and it’s all a recipe for disaster!

Welcome to the geekmummy blog. I am the geekmummy, my real name is Ruth Arnold, wife to John (the geekdaddy), and mummy to two geek children. Our daughter, Catherine, hereafter referred to as the geekdaughter, is a delightful, boisterous, tech-loving pre-schooler. Our son, David, known as the geekson, was born in May 2010, and is already proficient at operating an iPad and pressing random buttons on the television remote control!
I’ve been blogging in various different forms since I started a LiveJournal in March 2005. I still intend to re-vitalise my long-dormant World of Warcraft-specific blog called Permanently Lost, but having two kids means I have a lot less time for gaming these days. John and I also produce a podcast called Just Relax, It’ll Happen, which started off as an infertility podcast when we were struggling to conceive, but has evolved into a parenting/geek couplecast. Again it’s been a while since our last episode, but we still intend to record more!

I’m a stay at home mum to my two children as well as being a business owner and best-selling author. With both my son and daughter at school all day, I blog, vlog, write, create, manage, plan, strategize, pitch, organize and network from 9am to 3pm then I’m mum and home-maker again until the next day, or after they are in bed if I’m really busy. Snuggle Bubby

SnuggleBubby began in September of 2010 when I decided that at nearly 17 weeks pregnant with my first child, I should really be documenting my life. The result is what you see before you.
To give you a little back story, the name Snuggle Bubby is kind of a strange (but apt!) description of me. From birth, my father always called me Bubby (or Bubs for short), and even at the age of 30, I still will respond to this term of endearment. And anyone who knows me knows that I love to snuggle more than anyone on earth, a trait I’m also pretty sure I got from my daddy.
So when deciding on a name for my website which is meant to chronicle my pregnancy, delivery and life going forward, I thought there was nothing more fitting. I am, and always will be, the Snuggle Bubby!

I worked as a secondary teacher in South London for seven years, leading a successful Media and Film Department and teaching Drama. It was very rewarding but all consuming, and after waiting a respectable 29 years, I decided getting pregnant was my exit strategy out of the education system. Mission accomplished, I took a career break to become a full time mum. In that time I have gained a five year old girl, a two year old boy, an MA in Media and Culture, a Diploma in Creative Writing, a pile of short stories, poems and life writing and two halves of a novel.
I have worked freelance as a writer education consultant and arts practitioner. In this time, I also experienced my greatest loss, that of my Mum in January 2011. My blog is my filing cabinet.
