Teen and Tween Round-up: University and the future

Well the summer holidays are nearly over, maybe they even are over where you are. Have you and your kids survived it? And, more importantly, have you enjoyed it?

With the start of the school year, it’s once more time for teens and tweens to get down to some work and think about the future. University applications and grammar school entrance exams come scarily near the start of the school year. And for those who have left school, it’s time to think about finding a job.

So what have our teens and tweens being doing over the holidays? And are they ready to make those all-important plans for the future?

Fair play to The 40 Year Old Domestic Goddess for attempting to inject some summer holiday harmony into her teen and tween and their home. Via the medium of cake making… It wasn’t the easiest ride, but I think she did a good job.

They might be getting bigger, but tweens can still ask embarrassing questions. Squirm along with Anna in The Adventures of a Middle Aged Matron as she’s faced with an awkward question and a little bit of cross-generational confusion…

No Point Crying Over Skimmed Milk is a new blog to me. She writes movingly about her fears as her son enters his final year of primary school, as well as her realisation that he is perhaps more grown up and ready than she gives him credit for.

Decision made: I’m Leaving My Husband is another new blog to me! It’s great to read some new blogs. Ava has discovered that she is the proud owner of not one, but TWO tween boys (I can relate to that!). She writes movingly about how different they are. Yep, I can relate to that too…

For me, at MumofThree World, summer has thrown up a slightly embarrassing issue. Personal hygiene. My son is only 9, but it seems like he needs to start thinking about it a little bit more. Is anyone else faced with this at such a young age?

Suzanne at 3 Children and It shares a lovely post I can completely relate t0 – how things change when one child goes away for a while and how you can enjoy some quality time with the children who are still at home. It shows the importance to the whole family of letting your teens and tweens go away on camps and residentials when they are ready.

Izzie Anderton has a guest post on her blog – from her own teenage daughter! Olivia shares some of the funny and awkward situations she gets into with her twin sister. It’s great to hear from teens themselves, so thanks very much to Olivia for sharing.

I absolutely love this post from Sonya aka Rock ‘n’ Roll Mum. Her daughter has just turned 17 and just sat her AS Levels. She’s entering her final year of school and the pressure is on to think about university But she has made her own very grown-up decision. Good for her!

Best Dad I Can Be’s daughter will be off to university later this month. She has been allotted five minutes to unpack the car and her Dad is despairing at how much stuff she ‘needs’ to take. (Sssh! Don’t tell BDICB, but speaking as a woman, it doesn’t seem *that* bad. Apart from the bath mat.) And I just had to share this other beautiful post from him about his daughter turning 18 recently. He looks back on her life and it is so moving! Get the tissues ready!
