Education Roundup: Pondering New Beginnings

This month’s BritMums Education Roundup is more of a thinking post rather than a doing post, as it seems many of us blogging parents are in pensive mode when it comes to our children’s education this September. A month that signals new beginnings for thousands of parents and children around the country, as 4 year olds troupe off to school for the first time ever, other kids get used to a new class or a new secondary school and some teens move on from the glory (or misery depending on which exam board marked their papers) of GCSE results to A-Levels.

I’m kicking off with a double-whammy from Sonya Cisco’s blog, The Ramblings of a formerly Rock ‘n’ Roll Mum. First up, Definitions – a few lines Sonya penned to sum up the emotion of seeing her daughter do really well in her GCSEs.

And secondly from Sonya, a Back To School Rhyme lamenting the financial burden of sending your child off to school – and she ain’t even talkin’ school fees here!

Talking of GCSEs and going back to school, Nikki Thomas over at StressyMummy.com has written a post entitled Going Back To School After GCSEs. Nikki’s son also did very well in his GCSEs, but she’s worried that after three months of doing pretty much sweet F.A. he is going to find the massive leap between GCSEs and A-Levels something of a shock. So, Nikki has kindly shared her thoughts on how to help teens settle into the new world order of A-Level study.

If you share Nikki’s concerns about new beginnings at school, you would do well to pay the Help Your Child To Learn blog a visit, for a wonderfully useful post on helping your child deal with the challenges that a new school, new class or both bring.

Of course for many parents and children out there, the start of a new term is also the start of a new school. It can be a daunting prospect all round, as Sarah Wood at Mum of Three World writes in First Impressions Count. Doing well at school isn’t just about being bright. It is also about being in the right environment to allow you to do your best. That means finding your social niche. Sarah writes what must go through many parents’ minds in the run up to their child starting at a new school.

And let’s not forget the littlies and their first day at school for the FIRST TIME EVER. Except, at the school where Marianne’s children are starting, where the induction process is spun out over a whopping 4 weeks. Yes, the first day can be nerve-wracking for parents and children alike, but this feels a bit like overkill. Focusing on home education in a slightly different form, I’d like to share my new blog with you. It is called Ma Puce and it’s geared towards helping parents teach their babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers French as a second language. The best time to start learning a second language is at the same time as learning a first language. Which means that parents have a fantastic opportunity to help their children reap all the benefits of bilingualism by helping them learn a second language from the outset.
