At Post-40 Bloggers we pride ourselves on being an eclectic, smart, funny, insightful, opinionated and generally colourful bunch of people. A group of people who write and blog authentically; defying stereotypes about who we are and what people assume people over 40 will be talking about.
That said, we are undoubtedly at that time of life where, if we are to remain authentic to what is really happening in our lives, certain subjects cannot be avoided. Therefore, if we are aging, it follows our parents or caregivers are aging, with all the attendant joys and woes that can entail.
Ironically, when I first read Lara’s moving tribute post, ‘He’s Still My Dad,’ I had not come into close contact with the condition of dementia. Lara’s post, nevertheless, made a powerful impression.
Then within weeks, I was to experience upfront and personal two, vibrant and feisty female relatives falling foul to dementia. It was painful to watch – especially when, in their lucid moments, they would ask if they had ‘slipped’ again. Is one saving grace of dementia that those afflicted don’t know what is happening to them?
I read Lara’s piece anew and applauded the way she managed to keep the spirit of her dad on the page – his dementia being only something that had happened to him, not who he is…or was.
Lara also bravely reads her post, and which it is my bitter-sweet pleasure to recommend as the Post-40 Bloggers not to miss post this month – ‘My Dad – The Personal Side of Dementia.’
A divorced mother of two grown up sons, (recently married again in a fairy-tale Twitter romance), a keen photographer and blogger, Lara can be found at:
