Politics round-up; fireworks, foxes and fairytales

I am writing this on the 5th of November, the day we celebrate Fireworks Night- now I am never certain whether we are celebrating that someone tried to blow up parliament, or rejoicing that he failed- I guess it depends on how you feel about politicians.

Someone who might be in the ‘Go Guy Fawkes’ camp is Homeless Mummy – the lack of help she received when she approached her MP and local Councillors for assistance is not good enough.

I should imagine Caterpillar Tales would prefer parliament in one piece, mostly as she was there in person recently to be interviewed as a witness by the Select committee on Support for Home Education. I hope they listened to her experience and knowledge on the subject.

Staying on the topic of education Little Sheep Learning looks at concerns of parents re Draft Legislation – Children SEN & Disabilities, and there is a link to a petition for those who want to ensure their concerns are noted.

Of course we all get to say in who our politicians are, and probably better to vote them out of power than to plot treason, and the right to vote is something I take seriously. With the US election imminent Her Pretty reflects on her first time voting four years ago. Her reaction was more profound than she expected. And on the day of the presidential election, Dorky Mum writes an in depth analysis of why she hopes Obama is victorious and why her family have a heightened level of interest in US events. And that post inspired MisterDoctorBecky to write his own Obama vs Romney article.

We also have elections upcoming on our own turf, and they are going under the radar a bit as it is something we have never voted for before. Inspired by the Lush campaign several bloggers – myself included – have touched on the Police and Crime Comissioner Elections being held next week. I recommend you read Mammasaurus‘ brilliant post or she may set the foxes on you! Aly at plus2point4 was also amongst those highlighting the importance of ensuring wildlife crime is taken seriously.

Moving on to politics in the Arts, Mums The Word reviewed Paranorman and discussed how she felt about the inclusion of an openly gay character in an animated kids film. Then in similar but unrelated posts two bloggers took on children’s books. Lady Curd performed a re-write of a Barbie book liberated from a Doctors surgery, and Lulastic adapted her daughters fairy tales with judicious use of stickers. Both posts made me laugh while still carrying an important message.

To finish I leave you with a couple of NHS related posts. Firstly sharing her personal experience to great effect this month is Exeter Mum in her moving post on why the Royal Brompton hospital means so much to her. And to end on a high – Daddacool actually made a difference, and bought about a positive change. I’d like to believe we can all do that if we stand up for things we believe strongly in.

P.S. – In a serious case of bad timing this homework post has to be submitted now- but am delighted to say I have woken up to find Obama has been re-elected- phew! is possibly an understatement. If you write about it link up below- or let me have it for inclusion next month!
