Politics Round-up: Big rows & women in politics

Hello, and welcome to the first politics round-up of 2014. The major thing that got you all talking this month was the prospect of longer school hours. I wrote my thoughts on the topic here, and this post would be packed with your reactions to the suggestion, except that we have a special BritMums post and link-up especially for the topic here. Another hot topic was the Big Benefits Row television debate. I only managed to stomach a few minutes of it before getting Currie related heartburn, it really was infuriating to see Jack Monroe not being allowed to speak, and her family being slurred. You can read Jack’s brilliant response to Edwina Currie on her blog A Girl Called Jack. I also really enjoyed the responses to the show written by Keynko and Pinkoddy.

The lack of women in the Conservative cabinet was newsworthy last week. I pondered on why I find the idea of being a politician both practically difficult and unappealing. I had a fab post tweeted to me by Linda Green, author of the novel ‘The Mummyfesto’, this article on her blog looks at why women in politics is still a work of fiction. I am also looking forward to reading the novel, as I love the premise behind it and the ideas shared in this post. Meanwhile Mum Vs Austerity takes it further and wonders about the lack of working class or poor MPs as well as the lack of enough women.

Lynn at A Slice of Lemon’s Cake responds to an email from George Osborne.

Jane Young makes some interesting points about the ‘We’re a wealthy country’ statement from David Cameron re flooding, and wonders why the same doesn’t apply when others are facing their own daily battles.
