Poetry and Prose: Chills, spills and thrills

November appears with a pop and a flash
With warming food like bangers and mash
The days are short, nights spent by the fire
Let’s cuddle up as the flames get higher 
The decs appear and the lights go on
We start to hear some familiar songs
May your hearts be full of the good cheer
It won’t be long before Christmas is here!

I don’t know about you but I love this time of year. I love being able to sit at home with it getting darker earlier, finding a good programme to watch on TV (rather excited about MasterChef and the Junior Bake Off!) and sharing a lovely warming meal with my family. The build-up to Christmas seems to be the best part. Ah, good times!

I have to say that I have seen a fantastic plethora of poetry this month. This time of year sees me much more creative and recently I believe that I wrote one of my best poems called ‘Fairytales Almost Never Tell the Truth‘. This seemed to inspire a few other people including Liska at New Mum Online who read my poem and then went off to write something which she always believed to be true in the form of ‘The One About The Girl‘. Similarly Katie from A Mother Thing shared her thoughts and feelings in ‘Everything Has Changed Today‘, feeling like she was taking a step through life with each verse and Kate on Thin Ice wrote a fantastic poem about someone she never really knew, ‘Who Are You?’

There have been lots of mums sharing their feelings in poetry and prose about their children in so many different ways, and it seemed to encourage many more people to be inspired and write poetry. Lucy over at Capture by Lucy shared how she felt in ‘Mums on The Run‘ as did Mayfair Mum in ‘School Run Mum’, Cathie wrote a clever poem about Lucas in ‘The Classroom Cad‘, Emily at Tealady Mumbles showed how she cares for her little one in ‘Hold Out Your Arms‘ and Blue Beret Mum shared her feelings about Peanut’s ‘Grandparents‘. Distressed Housewife wrote a brilliantly funny ditty called ‘Half Term Horror‘ – something I believe we can all relate to in some form! Make Me An Earth Mother shared ‘That’s Our Daughter‘ and Ava at Sometimes Mermaid brought tears to my eyes with ‘Not Quite Chicken Soup‘. Finally Judith at Secrets of the Sandpit wrote a beautiful poem to her daughter and shared it in both Dutch and English, ‘Emilie’.

Lots of people shared poems about Autumn including And Baby Makes Three.We also had very talented younger writers – namely Red Peffer‘s 7 year old daughter in ‘The Wild Wood‘ and Bethany, from The Olivers Madhouse who is developing a real talent for poetry – I love her latest offering ‘The Day the Telly Broke Down‘.

There were also a number of significant events happening during October which gave many people inspiration to write for the occasion, the first being National Poetry Day. MishMashMomma wrote a beautiful tribute called ‘My Kenya is in Mourning‘, whilst Lolly at The Uncheshire Mum wrote a poem about the day itself in ‘National Poetry Day’. Sarah at Pacific Ring Life wrote about ‘San Francisco in Fall’ and Dragonsflypoppy at White Feathers and More chose this very day to share a poem about some very sad news affecting her family in ‘Disconnected‘.

Babyloss Awareness week affects many people all over the world and a few ladies, including me, wrote a poem about how it had affected their lives. Jennie at Edspire shared her fantastically poignant and beautifully written poem ‘Born to Be an Angel‘ and Jeanette at DitchFlabGetFab shared her thoughts and feelings in ‘Soar On High‘. On 10th October there was also World Mental Health Day and Livi at Mrs Teepot wrote a brave poem called ‘This is the Face of Mental Illness‘ and I thought Instinctive Mum’s words were so powerful and full of raw emotion in ‘Power Through‘.

One of the biggest events which saw people writing creatively was Halloween. I shared a fabulous story called ‘How to Make a Sand Witch’ with my daughter one bedtime. Written by David at Lovely 2 C U, it really caught her imagination and she was spellbound. I knew she loved it when she started asking me loads of questions at the end! There were two very scary posts from All At Sea and Supper and Syntax (both of which I read far too late at night!!). The fun Halloween poetry came from Lisa’s Life and Splashes and Dashes of Yellow. Older Mum in a Muddle tackled a tricky subject in ‘Garden Warfare’ and Beautiful Misbehaviour held a spooky-themed ‘Virtual Open Mic Night’.

Finally I will leave you with a poem which will strike a chord with every single blogger, a poem which you will all associate with. I give you ‘Ode to the Blogger‘ from Life Through the Wrong End of the Telescope.
