Photo Round-up: Capturing the decisive moment

Wow. Before I get started on this month’s photo blog round up, I just have to say there are so many amazing blogs out there. As I trawl through them all looking for inspiring posts to go with my theme, I am so inspired to try harder with my blog and post more regularly. My hat’s off to you, ladies and gentlemen.

Following on from last month’s post, in which I urged everyone to get in the picture, this month I’m looking at capturing moments. Isn’t that what photography is all about? The decisive moment? As Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative…Once you miss it, it is gone forever.”

So this month, I am looking at bloggers who are capturing a moment in time, an event – whether it’s as big as a birthday as small as a walk in the park.

“Spaghetti Baby” on I Carried a Watermelon is an example of a shoot I did a few months ago with my daughter. One of the things she loves to do is eat spaghetti. It’s a messy, but thoroughly enjoyable experience and every time I look at these images I think of the complete joy and abandonment she shows when she’s wolfing down pasta.

Always a great blog for photography, Dear Beautiful captures the young and tenuous relationship between brother and sister in “Because”, with gorgeous and evocative copy to match.

With her super stylish children, Casey Leigh shares moments of her Family Easter with us, full of colourful eggs and blue skies (obviously this did not take place in the UK).

This is a beautiful post that really shows the importance of pictures to help cement us to our history. On That Spencer Bloke, he talks candidly about his mother’s illness and their relationship. He shows us that it’s not just our children’s moments that we should be looking to capture.

The first six weeks of having a baby go by in a flash, which I why I love how Susan K Mann made sure to document this precious time in images. The great thing about being a blogger is that I think our blogs do push us to document important times like this. Congratulations, Susan!

Finally, I am totally in love with Mama Owl right now. This post about Christmas traditions with images showing them upholding their traditions year after year is inspirational. And I am borrowing her new pajamas on Christmas Eve tradition (in fact, I just told my husband about it and he loves it, too).

Your assignment this month is to think of 3 things that your child likes to do, be it playing with dolls, building sandcastles or eating strawberries. Photograph it. Post it!
